Can someone explain to me why the US needs an electoral college at all? I understand the basis of electoral college votes assigned to states, so no need to get into the numbers game, but if the "electors" are simply expected to vote according to the state outcomes from 8 Nov, then isn't the allocation of the 540 votes over and done by 9 Nov? Why all the pomp and circumstance that follows until the actual declaration of President and Vice-President on 6 Jan?

The whole notion of electoral college electors having the freedom to vote according to their conscience would seem like an opportunity to change the outcome of the 8 Nov result (Wikipedia on Electoral College: "Many times, though, the electors are simply important people whose wisdom would ideally provide a better choice than a larger body. The system can ignore the wishes of a general membership." But it seems any elector who might NOT vote as expected gets threatened with death!!!

OK, so go ahead and have the electoral college cast their 540 votes "on the Monday after the second Wednesday in December." But given that the actual electoral college vote outcome is known that day, why the need to send the sealed certifications of the vote in mahogany boxes to the House for official counting on 6 Jan? I know this is the last opportunity for objections to be raised (a final sanity check, I suppose), and I know it has happened in the past, but it all seems like a waste of time and effort if the end result is what was essentially decided -- and expected to remain as such -- on 8 Nov?

I'm not suggesting getting rid of the notion of the electoral college, but let the masses cast their ballots (8 Nov), count up the number of "electoral college votes" that each state got (late on 8 Nov; early 9 Nov), and declare the new President-elect. Done! Finished! Fertig! Finito!
