I purchased a 100mm IS USM macro lens. Used it today and I hear a clicking sound while focusing. Seems to be hunting for focus. I called Canon and they heard it also on my speaker phone. He said I have a one year warranty and to use it until I can get it to Canon to be checked out. I have read up on it, and other people have said they hear the same noise. DOES ANYONE HAVE THIS LENS, that would like to comment about it. Do you hear the noise??? Thanks. Vince

You have already established the existence of "the noise" with Canon and with others. So it is not your imagination. I suggest getting the lens to Canon asap and not waiting until the warranty is about to expire. Why wait?

Others say they hear it on "their" lens.

If enough cars have the same defect, the dealers start telling people it is normal. Being normal is not the same as being right.

Send it in and get it checked.

They seem to be saying there is indeed a problem. Assuming you don't "need" it right now, I'd send it in now before they have time to rethink the whole thing.

Which is why it's always good to buy from a store with with a 30 day return policy. Get a lens with a noise? Return it for a replacement.

I would say there is something wrong. I have this lens and it is completely quiet and does not hunt for focus.

It makes about as much sense as the OP. Just another opinion.

The AF mechanism and the IS mechanism will make some soft noises and you may even feel some subtle movement as everything settles down.

Before sending the lens back, or invoking your warranty, I suggest you mount the lens on a tripod, aim it at a stationary target, like a newspaper taped to the wall. Turn off IS and just let the AF do its job. It should snap into focus instantly with no hunting.

If you are using it hand-held, and you are close to your subject, even if the subject is not moving, you are, and the lens is just trying to respond, adjusting focus, as it should. The stationary camera and subject should reveal if there is a problem with the lens and hunting focus.

Next would be to set the lens to manual focus, hand-held, and try to focus on a stationary subject. This will test your IS. Be sure and keep your shutter speed longer than 1/500. Few IS systems offer any advantage at shutter speeds shorter than 1/500.

You could try posting your question in the True Macro section. You should get more replies from people who have the lens.

"...use it until I can get it to Canon to be checked out."

Canon gave you the best answer.
