I hate the Passports. I've had one fail for no reason, not a long time owning and no abuse but lost a lot of important stuff on it.

I've heard horror stories about these.

What would be your recommendation? I have a WD Ultra 1T for about 4 months. So far no problem.

Appreciate all your comments on this. I am back in town and going to start the process today following you suggestions and others. Last resort, send it in to a data recovery service, but hopefully, because of the cost, that will be the last resort. The freezer option seems incredible, but, who knows. What ever works, right!

I saw an advert for WD My Cloud 2TB for about $129.00 I ws thinking of getting it. Based on all the chatter about WD I will start to rethink about it.

I would have 2 questions (which might take a call or chat with WD to get answers, if then): which WD drive? (Black, blue, red, Re...?), and does the enclosure have a fan?

I was able to get the data off the failed WD My passport drive. The guy that help me use this software. I feel lucky and purchased another drive that I will use as another backup on my main computer. When I'm done, depending on the files, I will have 4 separate copies. I got another recommendation from a friend suggesting I backup my favorite photos on web somewhere, like the Cloud.

Appreciate all your comments on this.

Here is the link for the software used to recover the files. Oops, I tried to post the link, but the HOG will not let me. Just go to easeus.

Very glad to hear you were able to recover your data and good to have a DR copy in the cloud as well as a local backup. When you choose your cloud provider, make sure you use a company you know is financially stable and will still be there when you need them like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Apple...
