Funny, but I almost posted a similar question. I was wondering what this group thought about the future of the mirrorless camera and the DSLR. The mirrorless are not cheap, and they do not have a neat abbreviation (like DSLR). The reviews I have read say they produce nice images, but are not in the same league as the DSLR.
Of course, there will be progress. Will their smaller sensors be able to turn out images as good as the DSLR? Time will tell.

Sensor Size is not an issue the Sony Nex and Pentax K-01 both use the same size as the Pentax K-5 and Nikon D7000. My main issue with mirrorless is the fact you have no view finder or you get a EVF
Other than the NEX series from Sony and the Pentax K-01 all other mirrorless have poor High ISO performance

That's why I posted this. Their not in the same league YET...give them another couple years.
I too have been reading up on them and would not waste my money on them as of yet. Wait another 2 years and then see about it.

there is a reason the evil canon empire has not released a mirrorless canon yet.

true, or they are running scared of the big dog the mighty d-800
A few general observations:
I think we'll see the digital photography field strive for some of the same things the rest of the digital world is heading for.
Example: Less heat buildup while the device is powered on and in use. We see this in laptop computers.
Example: Fewer or NO moving parts. Mirrorless cameras are a step in this direction. I remember a Canon (shhhh!) Pellix in the old days that had a stationary mirror. Also consider the move away from CD's and DVD's (they require mechanical movement) and toward flash-drives.
The only problem is we need brave and well funded souls to purchase these new products BEFORE they are tried and proven, in order to fund the progress. Me...I'm chicken! How about you?
I have gone mirrorless (Olympus PEN) for my UV/VIS/IR photography, because I need the Live View, which is not available from Sigma and I did not want the significant expense of switching to Nikon or Canon. So far I am pleased with my OLY. All of the UV lenses are manual focus, which I prefer. Shot some birds over the weekend in IR, but will have to do some PP to get B&W. Will post if they're good enough.

Would you like to buy my Beta old video recorders?
Seriously, you are exactly right. Another thing to consider is profit. If the company cannot make a profit on it, it stays in the lab. If the public is buying the current crop, is it worth their while to take a chance on new technology? I'm sure that has a lot to do with the introduction of new cameras. If Model A is selling off the shelves, there's little incentive to take a chance introducing Model B.
One thing is for sure: we will have better stuff in the future, but I'm not the patient type. I wanted it yesterday.
I am excited about the possibilities in the future of this type of camera, but also have visions of a wait for progress. Hope they are developed SOON, and are of high quality!
Just purchased a Sony NEX-7 last week with the kit lens to replace my Canon Rebel. Wow, what a camera! With the APS-C sensor (larger that the Rebel's), details are extraordinary. The camera is lighter and the three wheels controls system is starting to feel natural now. As for the viewfinder, the OLED one in the Nex 7 looks great and I feel I am not missing the one in the Rebel. We will see if the good feelings stand the test of time!
