Sometimes something in the foreground adds to the picture. I see nothing wrong with your picture. As for the clone tool, read HELP FILE from menu option. Your help file will tell you all about 'it' and everything else you will want to know.

Be aware that I am far from being an expert, and better answers will be offered. One thing to consider is the layer you are working on. If there are several layers open, you must click on the one you want to modify.

As for the horizon, I have done this a few times in LR4. you click on one end of the tilted horizon, drag the line to the other side and click again. The program will do the straightening. I can't give you any more details, but I'm sure someone will.

Hi stephen s,

I suggest using the Spot Healing Brush Tool. I'd do as follows:
*Press Ctrl J (cmd on MAC) to duplicate the layer
*Select the Spot Healing Brush Tool
*Paint over the area in question making certain Layer1 is selected
*Press Ctrl Z if you don't like the "fix" applied to the pic
*You could also use the Healing Brush Tool if you want to select the area of the photo you want to clone (via the Alt key) into the offensive area

I'd need a better example of what you are trying to do. The spot healing tool isn't great if you are working with large areas. You need to use the clone tool, and work with a variety to different sizes to get the effect you want.

This is how I would get rid of the left foreground plants (although I wouldn't, they add depth to the image).

If you are attempting to work on the background layer, you might need to double click on it first (in the layers palette or whatever that is called) to turn it into a modifiable "layer 0," or make a duplicate layer which can then accept modifications. Some operations are not allowed on the background layer. If you already have multiple layers, as another post mentioned, check whether the layer currently selected is the one you want to work on -- easy to forget sometimes.

after selectingclone stamp, you must scroll over to a part of your photo where you want to get the clone from and hit the alt button, then go to where you want to clone out then click and move the mouse!

Depending on what exactly you have done you may need to flatten the layers. SAVE what you have done so far first under a different name in case you wish to go back.
To straighten the horizon use the tool with two windows overlaid on each other. Click on one side of the line you wish to make horizontal. Drag to the other side and let go. As an alternative you can crop and straighten at the same time. Draw your crop frame so that one side is adjacent to the line you wish to straighten. Move the cursor just outside a corner until you see a curved arrow. Click on this and rotate the crop frame until it is parallel to your horizon. Let go. Now pull the corners and the crop box itself to the desired final configuration and click the green check mark.
Sounds much more complicated than it is. If I have explained this as badly as it looks on rereading it and you're now rolling your eyes, you can send me a message direct and I'll try and talk you through it. On the phone maybe....?
