I've saved much money over the years buying grey market, second-hand and store display models. I'm aware there's a risk, but it's a calculated risk. Should a camera or lens fail prematurely, I can simply toss it into the trash and I'm still way ahead concerning savings.

Interesting. You're saying that if you buy a Nikon gray market D7200 camera for $699, that can't be repaired by Nikon USA, is better than a refurbished D7200 for $789 with a 90 day warranty, and can be repaired in the USA is better? You'd rather toss the $699 gray market camera in the trash, because you're still way ahead in savings.

You are better off with a refurb (especially if Nikon did the work). A-B-C all are having solid deals well under $800 for the D7200 body. Cameta offers a 1-yr warranty (it's a Mack warranty) beyond the 90days given by Nikon and you can get additional warranty time at a decent price.
Nikon will not touch a grey market camera so you would have to find someone willing to do a repair and then you have nothing more than their promise that all will work well.
All my cameras (D5000, D7000 and now my D7200 as well as my SB600 and 700) have all be refurbs. Never had a problem, but always had a good night's sleep not having to worry about a repair.

Gray market can be a real problem with Nikon USA repair in NY or LA. It frequently requires unauthorized repair service, or if authorized, not covered by warranty.

That is not at all what I'm saying. I'm talking about the long-term habit of buying grey market, refurbished and used. If you shop wisely, the savings rate will be significantly higher than the failure rate.

Purpose of the body:

I want to upgrade the IQ of my D90. This would be my backup body to a D800 and go with me on studio and event shoots, It will also be the core of my mid-size travel kit, along with a Tokina 11-16, Nikkor18-55, Nikkor 55-200 and Nikkor 35 1.8. (I could sub in an 18-200 if I'm feeling lazy.)

Problem:

My sense of risk aversion is in direct conflict with my core value of cheapness.

Questions:

Has anyone tried to repair a Gray Market Nikon with Nikon USA since their policy changed and how did it go?
Has anyone bought a Gray Market camera and how did that go?
Has anyone bought from Electronics Alley and how did that to?

(I've had good experience with two Nikon Refurbs so far: The D90 and a D5500.)

Thanks in advance!

Order a Nikon factory refurb from Cameta Camera. I've had several refurbs from them and they have stood behind every one. I've also ordered a couple new cameras. I'm sure others will do well. I've had good ones from Adorama as well. If you choose Cameta, tell them I sent you. LOL. There's not much upside to getting grey market. Probably never need it, but having a warranty is worthwhile if you do. Also why go with an unknown company when you will get hundreds of recommendations here for Adorama, BH, Cameta.

Personally I'd go with the D500. Its controls are more similar to your D800's. The 7200's controls are more similar to your D90 and a D750.

Steve, sure go ahead. When something happens to it, you'll have a stylish paperweight.
