Nikon d5300 problem

I recently purchased a refurbished Nikon D5300. It seems to drain the battery even though the camera is turned off. If I turn the camera off, then turn it on in a few days the battery is dead. Anyone else have this problem? Thoughts?

Rechargeable batteries will drain over time, even when not in use.
For one to drain that quickly sounds to me to be defective.

I think I found the answer to my problem: the GPS was turned on. I found a discussion of this problem on the web and apparently if the GPS is turned on it continues to drain the battery even if the camera is turned off. Bad design... I've turned the GPS off; hopefully this solves the problem.

Absolutely something to check first. Also, if the battery is old, it will drain on its own. Buy a new battery if turning off the GPS feature doesn't solve the problem.

Right! I keep it turned off on my cameras that have it, although I use it when traveling.

Also watch out for the wifi which will drain the battery but only when the camera is on.

Be sure to turn off the GPS.

Ah, I see you got it. If you also leave wifi off and don't use auto preview you will get a month out of one battery with modest use.

You might also verify that it came with the new higher capacity battery. It is grey vs. black. It might be like 1200 mamphr vs. 1000...so 20% more energy storage.

PS: I use the generic ones. Above just to illustrate.
