Heading out for a shoot this morning and I decided two things: 1) I am going to shoot RAW + jpeg for the first time...I think my post-editing skills can handle a RAW file and 2) going to shoot full-on manual!!
Yup, going to move out of the pre-programmed modes where up until now I have spent all of my time and going to shoot manual. (Good-bye Portrait mode, hello Capital M) I've been reading up on all the great advice I garner from this site, brushed off my field guide for my camera, jotted down a few reminder notes and going to take the plunge.
If the results aren't too horrific, I will post a few this afternoon. :-D
Wish me luck - I'm off!
Let us see either way. Happy shooting!
Good Luck. Hope it goes well
Good luck I'm sure you will do fine.
Besides, shooting in M mode on a digital camera is not that big of a deal. Remember, you have that little thing on the back called a review screen. Too light or too dark? Simply adjust.
With film it was a different story.
Sounds like an adventure!
Good luck!
Good luck and be sure to let us see your great photos.
 Welcome to the dark side!

So it wasn't that bad, just like you all said! And thank you all for the wishes of luck.
So, here are two from today (took a few hundred more, but would take to long to upload them all :-) ) These are both in Manual mode, and all I did with them was convert them to JPG, did not do any editing of them except for a crop on the frog.
Here's my confusion: the editing that should be done to a RAW file is done prior to converting it to jpg, right? I mean, once you convert it to jpg, how is it different from a picture that you took AS a jpg? LOL, talk about a newbie question - I will be researching but thought I would ask fellow UHH'ers as well.
Will keep on working with Manual, it wasn't that bad - and want to keep working with RAW but not really sure I understand at this point (before my research I am going to go do!) why that is better - off to read about RAW!
f/8 1/200 ISO100
f/5 1/320 ISO 200
Probably should have mentioned I was using my Sigma 18-250 lens on my Canon T3i....

Thanks Swamp Gator! It wasn't too bad, just like you said...and the little screen on the back is a bit of a life-saver for me. I am more confused about the RAW piece then I am the manual piece it turns out.

Wait, wait, let me check my notes - I think I know what to do if it's too dark. :)
It was fun! Made you think a little, I liked it. :)

Thanks MT Shooter - any day behind the camera is a happy one, so much better then being at work. :)

Thanks Gidgette! I'm not sure they qualify as great yet, I am definitely just a beginner! But, when you take 372 pictures, you're bound to get a few good ones, right? :-)
