Is there somewhere in the menu, where you can find the camera's total shutter count? I often see it listed when people are trying to sell their dslr . . .

There is no way to access that information with camera menus, but Nikon records it as metadata in every image file. Hence a program that displays Exif data can show the shutter count. Not all of them do though so it's a matter of getting the right program. Most web browsers have that functionality if you right click on an image and select the "Properties" menu option.

I prefer to download an image and view matadata using Phil Harvey's EXIFTOOL program. It can show everything...

My photo viewer on the computer does not show the shutter count in the EXIF "Details". It's whatever Win7Pro defaults to for photo viewing. I used the tool mentioned above and was able to get the count, though. My D50 backup camera has had about 30,000 activations (just over half the expected life) and my D7100 is barely getting started.

Edit in Picasa 3 and the count is found at the bottom of the metadata column on the RHS

Download EXIFTOOL. There is probably a lot more in the metadata that you aren't seeing now.

I would never buy a used camera without getting a shutter count.

Get Irfanview (free) and also get the plug-ins for it. Start the program, open a photo, click on Image > Information > Exif info. Or you can just press I and/or E to get lots of info.
Get ExifInfo - also free. Unzip and get the icon onto the Desktop. Find a photo and drag it onto the icon. A window will open with loads of info. Look down the list for Shutter Count (or whatever they call it).

I have been wondering how to find the shutter count! Just tried https://www.camerashuttercount.com/ and it works quickly and shows easy-to-read results.

Thanks!

I wish the shutter count was available for all cameras, and not just some DSLRs. You can keep track with the image number on the memory card, but it's not totally accurate. Looking at the picture count for a particular camera in Lightroom can also give an idea of the number of pictures taken.

Amen to that, Brother Jerry. Can I get an amen?
Getting the count for Nikon is easy but I also have a Sony RX100M3 and the count is available nowhere, noway. Are all Sonys that way?

"Amen," yes, but I'd also like to get some women.

I don't see the point in camera makers hiding the shutter count.
