Sony A6500 Lens Choice

Hi everyone: Hope you had a great photographic day! I'm on the preorder list for a Sony A6500 and I'm wrestling with the lens choice. I THINK I have it down to the Sony 18-105 and the Sony 18-200. I have a Nikon D7200 and Nikkor 200-500 lens that I use for my bird photography. The Sony will be used for shots of grandkids activities (twin 7 year olds) and for a European barge trip from Budapest to Transylvania next May. I like the fixed f4.0 aperture of the 18-105 and the fact although a little heavy, the 4" length does not change when zooming as the zoom machinations are all internal. However, the extra zoom range in the 18-200 is appealing. The only reviews I can find for the 18-200 are several years old, and they mention some "softness" all the way through the entire zoom range. I have read a lot of the 18-105 reviews which are current and all are very complimentary. Anyone actually used any of these combinations? What are your thoughts/recommendations?

Many thanks for any help.

Trey Ratcliff is a Professional who hung up the Nikon and went exclusively to Sony mirrorless.

I considered both of these lenses for my A6000. I decided on the 18-105 fot its better IQ reviews and have not regretted my decision once. It is a lovely lens in every way including the reasons you mentioned. I already had the 55-210 to cover any longer needs. I don't think I have used the 55-210 once since I got the 18-105. 18-105 is perfect for travelling. If you really insist on going for the longer reach I would consider looking at other brands and getting one of the fotodiox adaptors. The in camera stabilization on the A6500 opens up the whole world of quality lenses to you

Don't forget you can use Sony fe lenses as well. Some very nice choices with Zeiss and others.

I think the 18-105 gets better reviews, but a little heavier

I have an SEL 18200LE on my a6300. It is a zoom lens, but I don't get any softness. I have used it for almost two years (On my a6000 first) and couldn't be happier. My only other lens is a 50mm f1.8 for shooting in museums and cathedral type situations. It almost never gets used as the high ISOs on the a6300 are so noise-free. (I also shoot some legacy Nikons with a Fotodiox adapter.) Adorama has the 18-200 on sale today at $350. That's less than half the original price I paid.)

Get the 18-105 and use the JPEG Clear Image Zoom to take you to 210mm .......

WOW - do you have a link. I crawled all over Adoramas site (I am a repeat customer) and could only find that lens for $798

Just so everyone is aware, Sigma makes the 19,30, and 60mm f2.8 primes @ $200 each with very, very good IQ !

Check out DXO for lens ratings. This will give a really good idea what's out there and what will give you some great shots.

I use the 18-105 almost all the time. I also have the 18-200, and it does give me problems with contacts to the Nex-7. For use with video, you cannot beat the 18-105.

I use the 18-200LE and it is quite sharp. As good as my equivalent Nikon. I also use the 10-18 which is an awesome and sharp lens.

If you're watching $, and want a mid-range zoom; take a long look at the FE 28-70mm (SEL2870) and don't pay over $230 for one (slightly and carefully used). Yes, it's a full-frame lens on a crop-frame sensor, and it works just fine.
