Stock sites

Happy Thanksgiving, I hope you all have a safe and great day.
When you search STOCK SITES here on UHH not a lot of info comes up.
Ive been staying away from stock sites. Thinking making a few cents on a photo isn't worth my time.
Then last night I was reading a book about the photography business.
The guy asked this question. How much is Facebook paying you for posting your pictures?
Of course it nothing, and that struck a nerve. Then when I think back to my favorite Photography instructor
he mentioned that 15 to 20% or his yearly gross comes from stock sites.
So I guess I'll give it a try.

My question is, are you putting photos on stock sites?
Are you making money and if so how much a month?
What sites do you use and what sites do you stay away from?

any help pointing me in the right direction is much appreciated.

Not exactly stock, not my style, I use Fine Art America, an occasional sale, Bob.

Hi, I'm not trying to be flippant; try "stock photography sites" (without the quotes, of course). Good luck.

The Breakfast Stock Club And Great Escape Publishing,
they frequently send me stuff about stock photography , however they are trying to sell courses etc, Bob.

I have photos on an app called EyeEm, through them I have photos on Getty Images, several have sold for editorial usage. But I wouldn't count on too much money. All together, I have made a whopping $142.50 in about a year. But I haven't really applied myself lately. I do know that photos with people sell more than nature, they will need copyright releases on any photos accepted for stock, people or property. Maybe this will help you.

You may not get payed posting on Facebook, but the people viewing are family and friends. Their take on your shots will be a lot different than a photo editor looking to use your photos. You may not get rich with stock photography but anything you make will be more than what you get from Facebook. You have nothing to lose got for it.

Back in the day I made a little from stock sites, but nowadays not so much. There are too many free sites and stuff that can be "stolen" so easily off the internet. What I was told when I first started was to find a niche that you shoot, then find a stock company that feeds to that market. First, it will get you acceptance more easily, and second, you'll actually be marketing to your niche, so more likelihood of sales. And sales these days are pennies where it used to be dollars, unfortunately.

I have a handful of photos (130 something) in some now called "micro stock" sites. I may make a sale about one every other day. A quarter here a quarter there, after a wile it ads up to a couple bucks:)

Back in "the day" a photographer could make some extra coin from selling stock. But now with micro stock everybody is a photographer. Stock companies get gazillions of photos daily, diluting the stock pool. In order to get a photo approved it must be properly lit, focused, tilted and key worded. This all takes time but it has made ME a better photographer. ShutterStock is my best seller and is probably the most EZ to up load to.

Give it a try, have fun, Make some quarters:) Best of luck to you

I have about 30 files on Shutterstock and make about $300 per year. No, not much but I do sell at least one almost every day. One file has been sold more than 600 times. Fine Art America really hasn't done much for me and I am not thrilled with getting a few pennies per shot on Shutterstock but, I make money there without really doing anything.

I joined shutterstock, now as I look thru the site, say you want a bridge pic, there was over a thousand pages of bridge pix to choose from.
You have to be really good to sell a pic there. , BUT , I may have actually found something interesting. Pick a town , any town, see if its listed there. My hometown is a VERY historic town, but not one pic, so thats where I'll start.

I am an exclusive with IStock , and been there about 10 years. When I started I was making $200-$300 a month, then it dropped to about a $100 per month, now it's less than $50 per month.
Not a good trend, even tho I have triple the number of images on the site than I did 5 years ago. The market is super saturated, everybody is a photographer and there is more stock agencies now
then ever. Browse this site carefully, http://www.microstockgroup.com to get a really good idea what you might have to do to make money in the stock business.

I have a friend that does it with several but Getty is that one that I know she makes the most money from. I wouldn't say that she gets rich doing it, but it probably pays for most of her camera equipment. Getty is very picky about the images that they accept. No grainy or out of focus images. And it's a little difficult to get your foot in the door. You will not believe the pictures that they choose and pay her for. Many times its pictures that she never paid any attention to and the ones that she thought were her favorites never get bought.

I have a little over 200 images on shutterstock.. I sell almost every day.. and some days I sell several .. not much in making money but gratifying, and fun for me.. I had images on dreamstime and istock, but, although I received more for each image sold, I didn't sell as often. I think the clients of shutterstock are more in tune to my style.. I'd say give a few sites a try and see where you match best!

As mentioned above, I signed up for shutterstock, They approved 6 of my first 8 submitted, they rejected 2 because I neglected to remove my watermark.
I removed em and resent the pix. Im not doing it to get rich, I just hope I sell a few now and then. It gets exciting when someone actually thinks enough of your photos to buy one. Ive sold some on ebay in the past that was fun. By the time ebay took its cut and Paypal took its cut I was lucky I didnt owe them money....
