Recently, a fellow hogger took a picture and started a thread asking others what they thought. It happened to be a beautiful golden sunset. I posted a picture of my sailboat and said it would look even nicer if he could have included my boat. He got somewhat offended. I am just wondering how most of you would have felt. Personally speaking, I would not have minded in the least were it my thread

Wouldn't bother me at all but some people here object to it and I respect their choice.

Some people are just snobs, when you start a thread, it is open for all to respond, and that should include posting your own photos for comparison and comment, as long as it is not to "steal" the thread.

You were in the wrong. As a rule of thumb you should stick to the subject and do not off 'alternative' images unless otherwise specifically invited. This by the way WAS in the TOU* and sometime reinforced or permitted in some folks signature (like mine).

When in doubt always ask.

Would you pour an ingredient in someone's poison without asking first???

Common courtesy would be to ask first.

It's generally a no-no and thought of as high jacking unless (1) you ask the OP first, or (2) the OP asks for other images.

No problem if you add value. I would rather see that than many of the useless comments many post.

Shows how much you know about this site.

If I thought my picture could contribute, I would ask first. If I thought it would interest others, but would be somewhat off topic I would start a new thread.

You might be leaving out one point. I went back and read (all nine pages of) the thread you're referencing. The OP asked if his image was OK as is or how it could be improved. When the discussion turned to possibly including other elements such as palm trees, another member posted an image of his own to illustrate the point and there was no objection. You later posted your boat picture, not with a comment that his pic would look nicer with it included. You actually said you wouldn't mind if your boat was included. Big difference. The OP then advised you in diplomatic terms what the Forum policy is and why.

Had you just accepted that advice or reread the Forum rules, this thread would not be necessary.

There is no explaining it....after all, some people don't like pizza!

Personally it would not offend me, but I would respect others choice (such as Ron's, which is clearly stated in his signature line, although I don't recall anyone else being so explicit). While we're at it, I also don't personally mind if the thread takes a turn off-topic, as long as it's not completely off-base (an OP asks specifically about a certain lens and a response is about a completely different lens) - some of the more interesting discussions evolve that way; but again, just my opinion, and others will disagree.

You have the option to private message.
By the time zone difference, often things go 'off thread' by the time I read them. I like to 'Quote all' from the original question if I feel that I can add to the original post. I would think suggesting adding someone else's 'bit' of an image to your pictures is wrong on so many levels. simply suggesting a foreground subject would suffice.

This site is administered, but is not a Police State as such. Do not let it worry you! Few of us 'get it right' all of the time and quite often get a gentle rebuke from other members or Admin. Join in, Make waves, it is usually only occasionally that you get bitten by a crab!

have fun

Generally it doesn't bother me as long as the new post stays within the thread. What does bother me is when someone starts a thread on a subject and by 10-posts later the subject is completely morphed into something different.

Like yourself, most reasonable people don't seem to mind. If they do, it is easy enough to avoid a confrontation in the future. Starting a thread in a public forum does not imply ownership, and it is presumptuous to think otherwise. The only owners of anything here are those designated by and including the Admin.

If you have any questions about the rules you can look at them here:

And for posting in forums in general, here:

Most of this is common sense and common courtesy. Sadly, some are severely lacking in either one or both of these.
