I took this picture in July at Huntington Beach, SC. At first glance it's a throw away shot, but I thought I'd experiment a little in post to see if it could be salvaged.

Taken with Canon 1Dx II with Tamron 150-600mm at 600mm, 1/1250 sec, ISO 400, f9, handheld.

I first imported the .CR2 RAW file into DPP4, used the default settings, and immediately converted and saved as a .TIFF file (huge 140 mb file). I have no idea the ins and outs of DPP4 but generally like how the pictures look with it's default noise reduction settings. Then I brought the TIFF into Photo Shop and added some canvas in front of the bird, and exported as a .PNG file (19mb). Then finally imported the .PNG file into Lightroom for some final general contrast, highlight, and sharpening and export to the final .jpeg. Kind of a cumbersome workflow, I know.

Here's the result:

Not a bad shot after processing. Shows a good reason to shoot RAW. Wow, a 140MB TIF, what size would it have been as a PSD file in Photoshop?

I've never worked with PNG files other than obtaining them from the WEB and then converting them to something I'm used to.

When I saved the modified TIFF in PS, the resulting size grew to 440MB!! Thanks for your comments!

And it's all well worth what you did. You made a keeper out of the throwaway! Very well done! Forget the good old days. It's amazing what you can do today digitally! Well done.

Great save. Someone asked how large PSD would have been. If my recollection is correct the PSD would have been smaller. When I get back home will look at one of my raw files do some processing and save each way to see which is smaller.
