In February and March, I would suggest Port Aransas and Rockport. Whooping Cranes migrate to Aransas Bay during this time, and boat trips into the bay provide an outstanding opportunity to shoot not only Whoopers but other species. If there has been good rain in the area, there will be pools of water and many opportunities to find birds in these pools. Port Aransas has some very nice places to stay and some very good restaurants.

The Rio Grande Valley. I would suggest that you hook-up with one of the top professional photographers located in the RGV. Some really good ranches that specialize in wildlife photography. I can give you names if you are interested. While the Valley is not exactly SW Texas it is one of the top places in world for birders. I will guarantee you that you will see and photograph birds that you have never seen unless you have been there previously.

The Harlingen/Weslaco/McAllen area of the Rio Grande Valley is excellent. My favorite park in Texas for bird watching and photography is Estero LLano Grande SP. The have guided walks most every day, led by Huck Hutchens. Also Laguna Atascosa Park, Bentsen Rio Grande Park, South Padre Island Convention Center, etc. All offer great photo ops. A good place to stay is the Alamo Inn in Alamo, near McAllen. It caters to birders. Keith, the owner is a photographer, and a fount of knowledge about birding the area. If you visit during the first week of November, you can sign up for the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival. It is marvelous, and offers photo tours as some of its trips.
Good luck. You pretty much can't go wrong anywhere in the RGV.

Love Bentsen Rio Grande State Park south of Mission. We will be spending 3 months in the RV park next door this winter. You will see birds there you can only see in very few other parts of the USA. Close by is also Estero Llano State Park which is great. Port Aransas and Mustang Island for shore birds. Take a boat to see the Whooping Cranes!

I guess the accomodations must be ok. The homeless guys throw a rock at a store window just as the police ride by so they can get a warm place to sleep and a meal the next morning.

In April and May each year a phenomenon known as a 'fallout' occurs all the way along the gulf coast. The annual spring migration from South America to breeding grounds in the north often encounter extreme weather conditions and vast concentrations of a huge variety of birds make landfall exhausted, cold and hungry. One such spot is the convention center at South-Padre Island. I was fortunate enough to be in the country on a bird watching trip in April 2013 and got to witness a fallout at South Padre - I was totally unprepared for what I saw. The photographic opportunities were outstanding but sadly my camera at the time chose to malfunction or maybe it was just me. I would seriously recommend to anyone a trip along the coast from High- Island to Brownsville during the months of April and may. Google the subject and learn a bit more.
