I am desperately seeking any advice / guidance on programs to develop a photography website … I am looking to create a website on which I can display, blog and market my photography. Looking for something user-friendly and inexpensive, if such a thing exists. My husband is encouraging me to use WordPress, which has been a nightmare thus far, as I don’t feel it is geared towards photographers, nor is it user friendly for ME (my eyes glaze over when it comes to all the background functions, plug-ins, etc)… I have heard rumors that SquareSpace is a decent program … I would like to develop a site in THIS lifetime, and not end up in divorce over the process. Any suggestions on a program would be greatly appreciated … ease of use and cost are key. Thank you!

IPower has all the tools you'd need to develop a web site, accept payments securely, and a good deal of web site construction software available. There is a bit a learning, but there are tutorials on the site. The cost is about $3.95 / month. However, it does require some technical skill sets.

Consider using GODaddy. They have simple templates and a great price for the first year with a Domain Name. I have used them many times.

There are a few website builders for free - but it is questionable whether google etc recognise or send people to them. Perhaps a photography 'host' site may be a better solution if you want to sell images soon. We set up a 1to 1 website for a business 8 years ago and I don't think we have had any work from it yet! few enquiree's just to keep us hoping (and paying for the domain name but that's it).

Others may give you better advice

I had tried Smugmug for a year at a cost of $60 ... to sell photos would have cost about double that.
It wasn't that hard to use and they were helpful and answered questions quickly.

After a year I decided to build my own site and used Serif Webplus X8.
Older versions like X6 or X7 can be purchased for approx $25 or so.

Bought my domain name from Godaddy ... the 10 year deal.

Wix is very easy and fairly versatile although not geared specifically to photography. Like other "free" webbuilders, they make their money by charging to host your site. They have a number of plans, the least expensive being $5.00/month.

SmugMug is a photographer's web site. It can be simply a display site, or, it can be a full-on commercial site. I use it to display, store and market photos. SmugMug offers prints in various sizes, papers, finishes, etc.. They process the orders for a small fee with no involvement from me. Works great, but it does cost some money. Recommend you look at it and see if it suits your needs.

That's interesting - because I tried Smug Mug and found it very difficult and absolutely NO customer service! So I tried just using the Pro Gallery at Shutterfly and that is kinda working for me. But I am still looking for a good photography sale sites. I'll be watching this post too

Consider Weebly www.weebly.com - a multi-featured yet non-techie drag and drop web builder. Has all the features I think meets your needs. You can create a free site to try it out. I subscribe to there premium service, and have several sites inlcuding a personal photography website www.bobkyle.photography

I'm with PixelStan77 and use Go-daddy. I think I paid $76 for the year with a domain name the first month is free and it is very user friendly. Good luck.

Web hosts lure you in with an initial low monthly cost, but double or triple it after the initial 24 or 36 month period expires. I've been switching hosts, but it can take weeks to get things straightened out using their tech support. Web hosts also offer basic web tools which might be sufficient if all you want to do is post photos.

When I began my site, a friend recommended Adobe Dreamweaver, which is no longer available for separate purchase - CC only. Like anything from Adobe, it's big and complicated, but I've managed to use it. I would recommend giving WordPress a try. That seems to be very popular, and it's free, isn't it? There is also a lot of online support and courses for it. Making web sites is not a simple thing like using a word processor. That's why the pros charge so much to build sites.

I've been researching the same thing! Too many choices and no clear-cut answers. I've attached a PDF of a spreadsheet I put together listing a number of sites and just basic facts. I hope it's helpful to someone.

If you're willing to get a little further into it and build a page separate from your hosting service and load it and debug it yourself, you can download Microsoft Expressions (free). Somewhere between Weebly and Dreamweaver (which I found to be fairly complex) in complexity. If you decide on a seperate hosting service, I've been using Lunarpages for a decade, and they've never changed their price. Super fast and reliable with lots of options. They're $90/year and have an interface directly to Weebly (which is very easy, but somewhat limited) if you decide to go that way.

If you asking for a very user-friendly Web-Page design program, you may want to watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNpzlQxkiOo&feature=youtu.be

Despite the Title -- The Five Minute Website -- the tutorial takes about an hour but it does show one how to make a professional-looking website very quickly.
