I am looking for a solar filter that will fit the drop in filter of a canon 500mm lens. This drop in filter is a 52mm threaded holder. lots of solar filters found for telescopes but not having much luck finding ones for the camera lens

He's looking for a drop-in filter and not a screw-on for a 500 mm f4 I believe.

yes, I have the drop in filter that takes the 52mm threaded filter, i.e. the same idea as the one that screws onto the lens

To make this work you will need a 52mm filter of your choice. This filter will screw into the filter holder which will then slide into the lens barrel. B+W offers many diverse filters, you might try their cataloge. You are looking for a special feature filter and might have to search long and far. B&H has found several B+W specialty filters for me., you might try them. Good luck.

Here is a link to a small sheet of black polymer that we use as a solar filter... about $10...
https://www.amazon.com/Solar-Filter-Telescopes-Binoculars-Cameras/dp/B00DS7IFQS

I use this material on the finder scope of my large telescope when used as a solar telescope (with factory solar filter). I cut two layers of this material and place in front of the finder scope. You could do the same thing with your filters. But, be very careful if you use this technique... if the filter material should move or slip away, the sun will cook your eye and instantly warm up your lens and sensor...

You may try http://www.rainbowsymphony.com/ these filters fit over the lens and come in different sizes and different materials. If you can't find the exact size there is a video to help you fit the lens. They are inexpensive and work well. I'm using the Black Polymer. It gives a nice orange color. Hope this helps.
