Canon 60D Built in flash

My internal flash is not "popping up." 580EXII external works fine. Called Customer Service, ran few tests. On the flash shoe, on the right side there is a long arm under the rail. This is depressed when an external flash is installed. Under that arm is a microswitch which is probably not popping up when external flash is removed.

Has anyone successfully remediated this problem?

My 50D has that problem and Canon says it has to be sent to a repair facility as you can only get to it from the inside.

I haven't done it because I can't go without my camera and I don't really need it. It takes great shots with available light.

That is what I feared. Looks like my wife's G12 is the backup.

My backup is a D60 which takes good pics for what it is.

I had this problem with my 50D after a year or so. I tried many things but quit because I was afaid I would break something. You could hear the mechanism try to pop the flash up. I finally called a nearby (60 miles) repair shop and then drove there. The repairman took it in the backroom to determine the problem so as to give me an estimate and to my surprise he returned with it repaired. I don't know how he got it open but he said it looked as though there was soda pop in it sticking things together. I don't know how the pop got in there as I don't drink with the camera hanging around my neck. I don't remember the cost but in my case the repair was quick..

They say the best repair for a pop-up flash is super glue. The pop-up flash produces the worst light possible for photography . . . maybe having it get stuck closed is a God's send. :-)

Thanks for the chuckle. I think I've decided to stick with the 580EXII.
