Nikon has a chart for their teleconverter and lenses that are compatible. do not use a teleconverter on a lens unless you have confirmed it will be compatible, otherwise you will ruin your lens.

You cannot use a teleconverter on a 55-300. No, No, No.

If you are talking about a manual focus teleconverter, like the Nikon TC-200 2x, I recently found out that putting one on my Nikkor 55-300mm AFS VR lens automatically sets the aperture to f22. So it could only be used on manual aperture lenses. Using it on manual lenses I found the loss of detail basically invalidated the increased magnification.

I don't know how the more expensive electronic TC's would work, but for the same price you could buy a used Nikon1 J1 camera and a Nikon FT-1 autofocus adapter (about $350 for the pair) that will let you mount those lenses on the Nikon 1 J1 camera with a CX sensor, and get the benefit of a 2.7x crop factor. So you will basically get very close to the magnification of a 2x converter on a DX camera, without the loss of fast auto focus, light and detail.

Below is the Nikon 55-300mm lens, fully extended on a Nikon1 J1 with the FT-1 adapter. Another bonus is the whole rig only weighs 2.2 lbs.

While you "may' be able to find a TC that will mechanically work without destroying the front element of the TC or the rear element of your 55-300 you won't be happy with the results. Dark viewfinder, inability to auto focus, loss of image quality. The same goes for the 600, but you will have to add one more thing - you cannot hold a 600 with a TC steady, unless you are a frozen corpse. And the tripod and head you will need for that will cost more than the gear you have listed. So I would reconsider.

If a 600mm is not getting you close enough, then there is the problem. You need to be patient, become part of the animal's "hood" so to speak, and eventually it will come close enough to you to get a great shot. I shoot lots of things with a D800 and a 600mmF4 that way.

You have a very good sensor in the 3300 - capable of allowing you to CROP and using pixel enlargement if necessary. Today, this has become a viable option - and - IMO, better than any tele converter. In essence, that is what you would be doing if you bought the Nikon 1 as suggested - without spending any money !

Of course, your telephoto shooting technique would have to maximize the sharpness available with your current lens !

You might be able to use a Kenko Pro TC, but the loss of 1 stop with a 1.4 TC would probable make it impossible for the autofocus to function- you'd have to focus manually. Only the more expensive Nikon bodies like the D810 can autofocus to f8. None of the consumer bodies can. "The difference between men and boys is the price of their toys", eh?
