I've been buying ties from TireRack for decades, but they have gotten too expensive. Most recently, I would drive to CT to pick up the tires to save on the shipping cost and then mount and balance the tires myself. I decided that I didn't want to do the mounting anymore, so that introduced more expense. Looking online, I found Discount Tire Direct, with lower prices and free shipping. I bought wheels and tires from them for $702 vs $872 from TireRack. Like TireRack, the tires would be mounted and balanced for free. That's a substantial savings.
I've been using them for a couple of years, no complaints at all.
Been using them 40 yrs. They fix flats for free too, even is you are not a regular customer. Very nice people.
Thanks Jerry I will check them out.

Yep. Like you, I bought tires from Tire Rack for decades and had them installed locally, but I can actually now buy them cheaper from Discount Tire and get a quick replacement locally in the event I damage one. I have to say Jerry that I'm impressed that you mounted and balanced your own! I consider myself a hands-on car guy, having been seriously into cars most of my life and have rebuilt dozens of engines and still do my own brakes, etc., but I have rarely minted and balanced tires (don't have the mounting or balancing machine)
I've been a customer of Discount Tire for over 40 years, give or take. I wouldn't go to any other source for tire, or wheel, purchases.

For 35 years I go to a tire place on Lockwood Street in Newark. People bring in their cars , trucks and SUV's for new tires . The old ones that come off their vehicles sometimes are almost like new . For my SUV , four tires bought , balanced and mounted are over $1,000 . So at this place I got 4 tires , 50,000 miles rated , with 30,000 miles left on them for $60.00 per tire , balanced and mounted too !
I can't recommend you go there though , it's Newark , so if you want to go , please be careful or bring a gun ! Or bring a buddy and keep your doors locked .
I hope Trump can drain my old hometown ( swamp ) too . 😃

I've used Direct Tire, great people to deal with. Only complaint is that do not do front end alignments.

I bought a brand new, pneumatically powered tire changing machine. It cost over $12,000, but it was worth it. Kidding of course.
I got a simple tire changer from Harbor freight for about $45. With a few tire spoons, I changed tires on large and small wheels, even motorcycles, for years. Putting a new set of Michelins on my son's Fit, proved too difficult for me to continue doing this into the future, so I sold the changer and balancer. I've been working on cars since I was a teenager, and that's saved me lots of money. Prices for repairs today are ridiculous.

I agree with the high costs of vehicle repairs. I, like you have been working on my own vehicles since I was young. I am in the process of building my 47 Ford business man's coupes into a street rod. Unfortunately the house I now live in doesn't have a garage, so that is next on the list so I can continue building the car.
I just checked the price on a set for my pickup, I can get them cheaper at the dealership.

Lucky! I'd rather just drive in and drive out with new tires, but I don't want to pay $100+ more.

We have a used tire store in town, and I've sold them quite a few good tires. They pay based on size as well as condition. If a size will fits many different cars, they pay more for it.

Same tires? WE got better tires for less at Pep Boys for my wife's Outback, road hazard included, popped a tire and they replaced no charge, not even any paper work for me. Bob.
