Haunted Places: Bellamy Bridge.
Pray, if you will, for Elizabeth Jane Bellamy. May 11, 1837 was her Wedding Day. She was beautiful and looked radiant in her stunning Wedding dress of yards of chiffon, lace, and danger.
The fashions of the day, narrow waists and wide, flowing floor length gowns were difficult and hazardous when moving through rooms lit by candles, lanterns, and fireplaces.
Young Elizabeth brushed past a flame, perhaps in a moment of exuberance, and, in an instant, she was trapped in a dress of fire.
Screaming, she ran to the bank of the river and threw herself in. Her clothing, now waterlogged, dragged her down, down to her watery grave.
Her new husband, Dr. Samuel C. Bellamy, never remarried and spent the rest of his life mourning for his lost beloved bride. In 1853 his sorrow proved too much for him and he took his own life in Chattahoochee, Florida, 18 miles from where poor Elizabeth died.
Her spirit still lingers by this bridge some 180 years later, waiting and searching for her love and for the happiness she never knew.
We visited her today.
