Here are some more pictures of the shoot I did a couple Sunday's ago of the Family of three. I posted just one picture yesterday at http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-423191-1.html called Peek-A-Boo. It was a fun shoot with probably as good cooperation I could get from the 2 year old boy for an hour. Hope these meet everyone's approval. Thanks.

A goodly set of family snaps there Tom. Nice to see a bit of good 'ol straight photography from an 800 that hasn't been filtered and photoshopped within an inch of its life.

Good Morning Frank,

Yes, they seemed to like 9 of the images I had taken. They were pleased and I was as well. The entire shoot was for them to have some images they could use for memories with their 2 year old, as well as one or two for Christmas cards. Thanks very much for commenting, Frank.

Best Regards,
Tom

Greetings,

I believe they were happy with the results. They worked quite hard to keep the 2 year old in 'good spirits' and have an upbeat time for the hour it took for the shoot. Actually, it was very interesting (and rewarding) to watch the dynamics of the family unit working together when taking the pictures. The actions were reassuring that there still are some parents that take the time, effort, and love to spend and care for their child and the relationship they have with him.

Often time images are photoshopped to death. When I develop/process a digital image, I believe in the adage that a little is a lot. I am enhancing what I feel is necessary, and still keep it all as real looking as possible, meaning that the people and any other part should be kept looking like it does in real life, so to speak. One exception to this is when I convert a RAW format image of homeless men living on the street using digital artistry. When I do that, I feel like I have actually enhanced their photograph and showing other people, possibly, how cruel it can be living on the streets in a 'down and out' situation of life for these unfortunate men. Of course, I have no idea if they are there due to unfortunate circumstances or due to their poor judgement, but the resulting images are a dynamic representation of what I suspect was a result of just plain poor luck.

Thanks for looking at these 4 images of the family shoot I did and your positive and gracious comments. I hope all is well in Australia . . . Thank you once again.

Best Regards,
Tom

Randy,

That one is really my favorite as well. That is why I posted it first, yesterday, so people could comment on it and by itself. In fact, my wife saw it again, yesterday, when she got home from work, and said that they really need to have a picture of that one, so I may just give them that one for memory's sake!

I feel like, you; it may be one that will really mean something once that 2 year old gets older, say in college, or even a lot older - like me! It just seemed to really tell a story growing up, and presented it very well in picture format - like a picture is worth a 1000 words! It just seems like a moment the parents will cherish. Thanks for expressing your thoughts - I think we are both on the same wave length.

Best Regards,
Tom

I am so glad you posted these Tom as I am getting ready to do a family shoot soon for Christmas and the daughter's birthday. It should be a bit easier as the child is six. I like seeing the very natural looking images you have presented here.

Papa,

Thanks so much for your praise about the photos. It was an excellent Sunday morning, but then it got grey and cloudy and windy. I guess we lucked out that the weather cooperated for the shoot. Yes, that 'make a face shot' seems something they came up with a while ago. Makes for a funlooking picture, and different!

Best Regards,
Tom

Hi Andrea,

Hey, thanks very much for letting me know these shots may help you out with posing. That 6 year old will hopefully have more patience and won't get so tired or bored with the occasion. The way I posed them was pretty easy and just displays common settings, etc., with a little bit of fun thrown in! Are there just 3 people in your family shoot? Regardless, try to take at least two shots in succession of the group quickly for each pose so that if one person needs to be changed or adjusted due to eye contact, blown hair, or whatever, you may be lucky and get to do some photoshop work and make the image 'right.' I was fortunate since weveryone basically did well on the first shot, and with a 2 year old, more time just creates more problems - Hah!

The one thing to keep in mind is to try to have triangles formed in your grouping of the people. Also, generally, the man/husband is the hub or the anchor in family shoots and then the rest of the people are built/placed around him to form the triangles. At least that is one theory or method. Whatever you do, don't have them all stand in a line, don't have their head heights all the same, and try to get them to dress appropriately and coordinate their clothing colors and styles to a degree. Let them know that dark greens, blues, and browns usually work well, have them all wear shoes and not sneakers or running shoes, comb their hair, and beware of glare if any of them wear glasses.

I'm sure you are aware of all I have said, but just thought I would mention things as a reminder. Have some fun with it, and make sure you post them on UHH or send me a PM with some so I can see what you did for poses. Thanks very much, Andrea.

Best Regards,
Tom

I viewed these with great interest, because I'm thinking of doing this kind of work and also to work with pets. Good to see your results. Thanks.

Erich,

Thank you for your interest. If you get into taking portraits of people and/or pets, just have fun, relax, get your lighting setup properly, experimental first, of course, practice a lot, and then shoot to your heart's content!

Best Regards,
Tom
