Kinda cool, but a simple index card rubber banded to the flash will yield the same results by a good photographer. That would, of course, leave me out.

That would be incorrect Marion. What you are describing is a bounce card that throws about 90% of the light from the flash straight up to the ceiling. Of course that all but makes the bounce card useless where there is a high or dark ceiling, (typical in many churches) or out of doors where there is no ceiling from which to to bounce.
The Lite-Scoops throw about 90% of the light forward and the remaining light is dispersed in other directions to soften the effect of the main light. The Lite-Scoop requires no ceiling from which to bounce, so can be used as effective out of doors or indoors. Lite Genius also sells a "bounce card" which does what I described.

You don't understand. The flash is pointed AT the ceiling. The card disperses the light forward.

I understand very well. If the card is parallel to the direction of the flash it can only throw a small amount forward and 90% of the light goes right past the card to the ceiling. In order to throw more of the light toward the subject, the flash has to be tilted towards the subject, or the "card/reflector" has to catch the light to redirect it. Therefore the "card/reflector" cannot be a flat card parallel to the flash head. (see image)

If I see my teacher in the future I'll be sure to point out how much of an idiot he is.
He is quite old, and has been a pro working in the area since his 20's. He'll be glad to hear it.

Not all pros understand light . . . and old dogs really can learn new tricks! :-) Your teacher that has been working as a pro since the 20s has to now be about 115 years old . . . take it easy on him, OK?
