Nikkor 70-200 vs. Sigma 70-200

Has anyone bought and used and compared these two lenses for sharpness from f2.8 to f22.

The Sigma is half the price. I believe in Nikkor lenses, except the 18-200 for sharpness. The 18-200 is good at F8 & f11, but falls short at other apertures.

If I don't have to spend the extra money for the Nikkor, that would be nice, but if there is going to be a problem at certain apertures with the Sigma, then it's not worth the aggravation and frustration to me. I'm well aware of the expression, you get what you pay for. If the Sigma is as sharp as the Nikkor from at least f2.8 to f16, then I might consider getting it.

I appreciate your thoughts and comments.

YOU DID NOT SAY WHAT CAMERA THAT YOU ARE USING? A NIKON DX OR FX? A NIKON 80-200mm ON AN FX CAMERA IS VERY LIKELY ONE OF THE BEST LENSES EVER. SO EVEN IF YOU WERE NOW USING AN DX CAMERA THIS WOULD BE A GOOD SELECTION. ALSO THE TRADE IN VALUE ON NIKON LENSES IS TYPICALLY VERY GOOD.

I have the Sigma lens and it work great. I think it is well built and compares well with the Nikon lens. Sometimes you pay more for the name!

I have had the Nikon 80-200 f2.8 for over ten years and have used it on both film and digital cameras. I own 10 lens and have owned several others and this is without a doubt the best lens I have ever owned or used. My brother owns the Sigma and now wishes he had bought the Nikon. Of course that is just one persons opinion.

You will find a lot of information on this comparrison, if you search Sigma 70-200. Good luck with which ever you choose.

Go to Photozone and check out the lens resolution tests for both lenses and then make your decision. A little investigation on your part will give you the needed information.

I have the Nikon d700 and the Nikon lens, great lens, I also have the sigma 24mm 70mm and the Sigma 150mm to 500mm, I have no complains abot the Sigma lenses. They work great and are half the price.

I use a Sigma 18-200 lens and it is on my camera almost all the time. I researched the Nikon & Sigma and couldn't find anything that would result in paying so much more for a Nikon lens. By the way I shoot with a D90

I am in need of a good 70-200 f2.8 range lens myself. Currently cannot afford the newest Nikon but have been looking at Sigma, Tamron and Nikon VRI. A local craigslist add caught my attention -- a local guy selling his 70-200 Sigma for a good price. I met him and the lens looked in excellent condition. I put it on my D300 and shot arond the parking lot. Most of the shots were excellent but racked all the way out to 200 there was a very pronounced softness. When I mentioned this to the seller, he said yes, he had experienced the same and usually did not go out past 170 to 180. I passed on the lens. I'm still saving my pennies for that 70-200 2.8 VRII. I have not tried the Tamron in that focal length.

Thank you for that comment. That is what I am concerned about happening. As I mentioned in my original post I have the Nikkor 18-200 VR lens and I find it soft at certain apertures and racked out to 200mm. I am very critical of my photos, and become very upset when I get the shot I want and it's not tack sharp because of the lens. I usually make 16X20 and larger prints, so the image has to be tack sharp. If I have to spend the money to get a lens that is always going to deliver constant results, then so be it. I know someone who just bought the Sigma and is pleased with it, but I haven't seen his images. In the next couple of weeks I hope to do a shoot with him and I'll try it out. I appreciate you taking the time to post a comment. Thanks.
