What's Going On With My Camera?

I have an Olympus SX-31MR 16 meg camera that has been fantastic for several years now. Went to the Annual Military Ball the other night and took photos that turned out looking like something taken with an Instamatic. Get dressed in that uniform once a year and it was disappointing they didn't turn out. It also has a problem with focusing in any setting. Sometimes I must press down half way many times and move the center around a lot
before it actually focuses.
I used both the Auto and P settings, with and without flash; with the same poor results. I have a SanDisk Ultra 32GB micro in an adapter; been using it for about a year.
The photos are grainy and "slightly off color". Used Picasso to correct them, but this time it did nothing to help.
Anyone have suggestions as to what might be going on here?

Just a guess, but using A and P settings indoors without a flash may have given you too slow a shutter speed to eliminate camera shake. Also being indoors, it may have been too dark for the camera to AF properly.

Greg, it appears to me that it's a white balance issue. I took the liberty of checking white balance and it made quite an improvement.

Could your ISO be too high?

It would help if you posted the settings used, especially shutter speed and ISO, actually posting the image with store image would provide the EXIF settings used in most cases...

I would guess that the ISO was too high which brought in a bit of noise, and the shutter possibly too slow which would possibly add in camera shake and/or focus issues.

Depending on how much ambient light there is for the scene AF can have some troubles getting focus.

Yeah, but look at all of the noise. I don't think it is worn out, just a bunch of improper settings.

I tend to view that as grain, silver halide school of thought. I figured he used a rather high ISO, so that part was expected. I agree with the settings part, for sure.

I can understand the camera shake making it blurry. The icon was on telling me to "hold it still". But I have had that before and they turned out okay. The lighting was pretty good in that room. I wonder if it was the type of lighting that made the difference?

Yes, lots of noise. That is why I went with both A and P settings. Of course the flash wouldn't go off with the A settings, so went to the P setting to make it flash. Not much of a difference.

I bet you it was a high ISO with a slow shutter speed because it was light starved making it also difficult to achieve sharp focus.

Maybe next time I should just go to manual settings and set the ISO differently than the Auto set it. Didn't take the time to do that since many were lined up for photos in front of the flag. Or...maybe we should get more flags to line up in front so we can take a proper photo!! :)

I just took some photos using the same settings in a dimmer light condition, hand held, and they turned out just fine! Go figure!!!!
Thanks everyone for your input!!

Could there be a quality issue - what setting did you use for shooting, JPG Fine, Jpg Basic or JPG normal or raw?

Was there any resizing of the image done in post processing?

Would think the ISO would be set for me in the A mode. Didn't see much difference in A or P mode. Definitely too much noise!

I will pull that photo up and look at what the settings are. I should have done that before I posted. When using Picasso, doing the auto color, auto contrast, and then lighten it so I could see detail, it was extremely grainy.
