I've started using LR4 to edit images, and it's amazing what it can do. Question 1. After I make the changes, how do I save the image? There is no File > Save as... >

Question 2. I lost the menu that is spread across the top of the screen - Library, Develop, Map, etc. I know I can get it back by putting the cursor up there, but how can I keep it there?

Of course, just like every other Windows program. I saw that, but I thought it meant send it somewhere else - like exporting email addresses.

Because LR is non destructive; you never really work on the original; you create "prints" of the negative you are working on.

And as was said....you do that by choosing "file export" or "right click>export"

Go to lynda.com -- I believe there is a 30 day trial -- have good videos on LR.

Is the menu show/hide a Windows thing? I only have LR3, but I don't see anything in preferences that would cause that. On my Mac, there is a "full screen" display option that will do the same thing, but it seems to be limited to Apple programs, not the Adobe stuff.

This isn't the full screen thing. Originally, I had the menu on top, and now it's gone. I can get it back temporarily by putting the cursor up there.

I have LR 3 and want to upgrade to LR4 but have been putting it off until after a vacation trip that is coming up. I am told that the adjustments in LR4 are even more photographer centric, so I'm really looking forward to it.

I share the original poster's frustration and losing menu bars. It happens to me sometimes and I fish around and find a little triangle/arrow thing and click on it that usually brings whatever I am missing back. However, if I can't do it on my own, I usually google it and someone else has had the same problem and the answer is available. I am amazed at how easy it is to get free information on how to use Lightroom.

There will be a small arrow up near the top of the lr window. Click it to reveal tool bar permanently until you click the arrow again which will hide it. Happened to me when I first got 3 . They are on the sides and bottom too.

Saving is automatic and instantaneous. You don't need a button.

and on changes to RAWs (not sure on jpgs), it doesn't actually change the RAW. It makes a record in the catalog of what changes you make to the RAW, and keeps those there. So when the time comes to export to a jpg, it can produce that jpg with your adjustments.

LR uses a small side car file to store the information about your editing. That file is saved automatically. LR never changes the original file. If you want several versions of a photo, that can be done by making "virtual" copies. In Library mode, right click on the thumbnail and choose great. Irtual copy. You could have as many as you want!

As to the toolbar, yes, there should be a tiny triangle in the center just below where the tool at should be. That should toggle it on and off. This can also be done from, I think, the view menu. One other neat shortcut is the "tab" key will toggle the side toolbars on and off if you need more space to see the photo.

Adobe themselves have some superb training videos available. Look for the ones by Jullianne Kost. They are free! Well worth the time. http://jkost.com/lightroom.html#
