My Rebel XT died May 12, error 99; Canon wants minimum of $225 for repairs; I decided to just take that money and put it towards a new upgrade, but boy oh boy it's going to be a long summer without a camera while I save up for the T3i or 60D. To make matters even worse, I had just bought a new lens from a very nice guy on this forum not even two weeks before that, and then was given a very nice camera backpack for Mother's day.
~sigh~
BUT.... I am very pleased that I at least get to see what others are shooting here while I bide my time (im)patiently.
:)
Happy shooting to you all!

keh.com for used. you can probably get more camera for less money, or get camera and lens too! very reputable company to deal with. free 6 month warranty on their used gear. (try getting that from ebay or amazon) dont be afraid to look at gear rated bgn or ug. i have bought from those catagories and other then a few cosmetic blemishes or removing stickum with go gone they work perfect. where in northen mich? im from big rapids myself.

Hi wtompkins: I too would recommend checking out KEH, they have a great selection of used cameras at they are rated from refurbished, like new to down right ugly and even as is. Well worth checking out. Then there is also other reliable on line camera companies like B&H or Adorama. You may not have to wait as long as you think you will.
I'm sorry your camera quit... good luck to you in replacing it.

Wow! $225 for cleaning contacts that you could do yourself. Hope Bangee5 can do this. Good advice.

Here is a link to an easy to follow video on how to troubleshoot and fix your problem and perhaps not have to send the camera back to canon.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkXyLieNUDII just googled canon error 99 and that is what I found --- hope this helps to solve your problem. :)
Mine died last summer with a warranty issue and I lost it for 4 weeks last summer, they also lost my camera for a few days and I was going batty! Hope you are reunited with a new one soon!

Cannot imagine life without my Canon 5D, bought mine used on ebay years ago. Belonged to a Wedding Photographer,in Toronto Canada. After having Canon clean and fix I have been very satisfied with the camera. Got a 2500.00 dollar cam for 950.00, might look at ebay. Clean & Fix was 200.00.

other solution. pick up a cheap point and shoot untill you can replace your dslr. all my cameras never have needed to be repaired. course all my cameras brand name starts with the letter N!!!!!!
Thank you Bangee5 and flyguy - I've heard error 99 a couple times from a few others that I know and they sent their cameras in for repairs never knowing what was wrong to begin with - and paid around $150 for "fixing" the camera. At least with your info I know what to do with my Rebel XTi before spending a small fortune for what might be so simple a cure if I ever get an error 99. And I hope wthompkins reads and sees the video before spending her pepsi money.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions.
I googled error 99 and tried ALL the suggestions I could find, to no avail; called Canon, walked through a few things with them, still no go. I sent it to my brother, who lives in a very large city with lots of camera repair shops and also knows some professional photographers.
I DO have a P&S... but it's just not the same.
I have also looked at the sites listed here, among others, on getting a used (or new!) t3i or 60D.... whichever one I decide on I'll still have to wait a while for, as my last name is not Jobs or Rockefeller, and my most recent lens purchase depleted my "photography" fund.
You should see me on Thursdays... the day our local radio station gives away $1000 at a certain time of day - - I'm frantically dialing and re-dialing on my land-line phone, while doing the same thing with my cell phone! LOL!!
