Canon PowerShot SX50HS OR?.....

I have had a Canon PowerShot SX50HS for 3 years and have been extremely pleased with this camera...it's gotten lots of use and it's time to buy another camera...mainly because I'm taking a trip to Antarctica and am looking forward to all of the photo ops a trip like this has to offer. My problem is that while I would like to get a new generation of this model, the reviews are not so promising...particularly because Canon unwisely removed the eyepiece viewfinder...instead the only viewfinder is the LCD on the back of the camera, which I almost NEVER use when taking photos. Any suggestions? I prefer to stay in a price range under $1,000 and want the versatility that this single lens camera provides...great telephoto~

I think, like on my SX60HS, there is an optional electronic view finder.

The sx 60 has a much better viewfinder that the 50...we have both and the viewfinder is a significant improvement over the 50.

Canon sx60, one review: The SX60 HS has an updated electronic viewfinder with a resolution of 922k dots, up from the more pedestrian and, for its day, typical 202k EVF of its predecessor.

The SX60 has a viewfinder, 16 megapixels, a focal length to about 1360mm. The cost for a brand new one is about $500.

I also have the SX50HS and I love this camera. My friend has the sX60 so we have compared and I do not think that hers has any significant improvement over mine. My opinion would be to save your money and use it towards your trip and take the camera that you are familiar with and have a wonderful time.

Whatever you get, be sure to bring a backup of some kind with you. You won't see many big brown trucks in Antarctica.

I have a SX 60-HS with only 515 shots. Absolutely perfect condition. Comes with lens cap, lens hood, strap, battery charger and 3 batteries, (1 Canon, 2 aftermarket never used ) and a San-Disk 16mb card. Asking $300.00 USD plus shipping to lower 48 states. PayPal or check. ( check must clear before camera ships. ) View finder works perfectly well. Just as good as a standard glass view finder.

Have to agree with dmschet..... save your money and continue to enjoy your SX50 unless it is defective. Love mine and my 50 year old son just returned from a London and Rome, Italy adventure with fantastic photos using his SX50.

Plus another thing to consider you're at SX 50 camera has bigger pixels then the SX 60 model!

Not sure what "bigger pixels" means to the quality of a photo. For better quality doesn't it mean there should be "more" pixels which may mean they are smaller?

The Canon SX50 has 12.1 megapixels and a focal length to 1200mm. The Canon SX60 has 16 megapixels and a focal length to about 1360mm. The SX50 is no longer produced by Canon as a brand new camera anymore.
