I was there in 1956. That route was operated by the Denver and Rio Grand Western then. Near where I grew up in central PA we had the East Broad Top. These were two of a very few commercially operating narrow gauge railroads at that time. Both I think have been resurrected as railfan excursion railroads.

I was a 12-year-old foamer in 1957 who stumbled across the Denver & Rio Grande tracks in the woods as they traversed El Rancho Encantado dude ranch. I was insufferable (still am) until my parents agreed to flag down the train the next day. We rode in the baggage car with a chain across the door and the conductor offered us coffee from a blue porcelain-metal pot. It was the first time I saw my mother, who with my father were Austrian Jews and refugees who made it out in time, cry. The San Juan Mountains were snow-capped then, and they reminded her of Innsbruck and Salzburg. Yes, at age 71, I remember it to this day.

I’ve ridden this train several times since. And the CATS, too.

These are wonderful photos. Whenever I see these trains, it brings back memories. Thanks for sharing them with us.

I've not heard of the "circular balloon track" before.
Had to look that up and found it. Thanks, for a new to me term.

We enjoyed a wonderfully memorable ride on the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge RR on Sept 30, 2016. Since I have some smoke and cinders in my blood, I could not let this opportunity pass without capturing several images of the locomotives. Time for shooting was rather limited, but I was able to come away with a nice collection of photos of these magnificent old machines. Just a few quick facts:
1. The D&SNG RR is a federally designated National Historic Landmark, and so enjoys protection from random alterations
2. It was originally operated in the 1880's as a mining railroad for transporting gold and silver ore
3. The travel time over the 45.2 miles between Durango and Silverton is approximately 3-1/2 hours
4. The trains must be turned at each end of the trip. This is accomplished on a circular balloon track in Durango and on a wye track in Silverton
5. The railroad operates a wonderful museum, which is located only steps from the Durango depot

Posting 9 images, hope you enjoy and thanks for looking.

Very Nice set at the perfect time of year in Colorado. Glad you enjoyed your ride - it is one of my favorites. Also, the Cumbres & Toltec is great fun with excellent vistas.

I enjoyed the series very much Tom thank you for posting. When I was a little girl my uncle used to work on the Flying Scotsman. On a Sunday morning my Aunt would take me to the station and he would let me throw coal on to get the fire roaring, before he set off from Carlisle Railway Station.

Thank you very much Sylvia for taking a look and for your wonderful comments. I got "hooked" on trains as a child when my father worked for a railroad. He quit that job and moved us to a farm when I was 11, but the train bug stayed with me.

Thank you very much Newsguygeorge for taking a look and for your wonderful remarks. I also have some good childhood memories from the days of steam. I know we have to have progress, but sometimes I think it would be nice if we could go back to "the good old days" for just a little while.

Thank you so much Pat for looking in, glad you enjoyed my photos. I think the balloon track is more efficient because it allows the train to be turned in a single move instead of 3 moves. But I believe it does take up more space.
