The stones in the first image may have been more dramatic if you walked to the left. the stone on the left would have more sky behind it. This image is strong because of contrast in the composition. You just keep shooting away at everything and anything. You'll find your track. The Judge, judging the first competition I entered said to me "If you like it, that's all that really matters".

You are exploring - mid-range / macro; b&W / color; texture; contrast; You are definitely on the right track. Maybe think a bit more about composition. As somebody once told me - the center is reserved for God and God doesn't show up very often.
