I am considering either the Sigma 18-300 or Tamron 16-300 for my Nikon D7200. Many reviews consider the Tamron to be superior because of better image stabilization and auto focus systems. The Sigma has better image quality. I am more interested in real life use of the two lenses. Any advice would be appreciated.
I had the Tamron and did not like the results. Switch to the Sigma and are very pleased.

I use a Nikon 18-300 mm with good results.
I would go with Nikon 18-300. If that is not practical then I would go Sigma with image quality, from what I have learned, equal to Nikon.
Keep in mind that you get a 6 year warranty with Tamron.
I have a 7200 and it is married to a Tamron 16-300. It is reasonably sharp for a lens with this wide of a focal range. I had originally purchased the Sigma but sold it in favor of the Tamron. IQ is pretty similar with them but I like the ability to over-ride the auto focus without having to flip a switch......something the Tamron allows but the Sigma does not. The added 2mm on the wide end is useful as well. Auto focus is fast, color rendition is good, it has near macro ability, and it's small and light for it's focal range. I have many dx lenses, but this one gets more use than all the others combined.

I use the 28-300 Nikon for a general carry around lens.
Sigma lenses are crap. Everyone I've had has been terrible. I use Tamron & Nikon only.
I have the 16-300 & love it.
Beg to differ, creta1, I have a Sigma 17-50 that is a wonderful lense. Way sharper than the Tamron 16-270 I used to have. Of course, the narrower zoom is part of the reason. I keep the Sigma on my camera unless I need to go to my big gun Canon 70-200L 4.0. I love both of these lenses!

Nikon 18-300 or 28-300. Anything else is a compromise.

The Sigma 17-50 f2.8 has awesome image quality. It stays on my D5300 most of the time. I dumped the Nikon 18-55 for it.
Of course a smaller zoom range lens will be sharper. But my Sigma 150-500 also delivers great images. Although my Nikon 200-500 does better it isn't by much. Sigma was also very helpful on upgrading the firmware for free when I got the D5300....four years out of the lens warranty.

The choice is yours, but I have tried Sigma and Tamron, and while they are great lenses, I find they do not stand the test of time and use as well as Nikon lenses.
I got the Sigma and it's great... but... there is more pin cushion distortion than with my Nikon 70-300, especially noticable when taking pictures of buildings. I like that it works for wide angle as well as telephoto, and it's a lot lighter than the 70-300.
