I searched for 'Macrofier' but nothing came up, so I don't know if anyone has covered this in the past.
I'm working on a set of test shots using the Vello Macrofier reversing ring with the 18-55 kit lens that came with my Canon T6i.

The Vello Macrofier has electrical connections so auto-focus still works. As soon as I resolve some lighting issues I'll post some test shots here.
I also need better test subjects, shooting a dime gets boring quickly.

This device has excellent potential. A bracket-mounted, standard speedlight with softbox diffusion can be easily used with this set-up.
I will not be surprised if you are not happy with your reversed zoom kit lens, for two reasons:
1.) zoom lens are notoriously slow (small maximum aperture) allowing less light for critical focus; and
2.) zoom lens optics are a compromise compared to prime lens optics, especially in the periphery.
Nearly any fast (large aperture) prime lens will yield better results.

A 35mm or 50mm prime lens is on my wish list. Given that this is a crop sensor camera, is the 35mm the better choice?

If you are set on reversing, the 50mm may be the better choice for "general" shooting. However, nothing truly compares to a true macro lens, IMHO
