Mount St. Helens...in miniature
I have been witnessing in my backyard for a few weeks, the birth, maturing and "explosion" of a very pretty mushroom...Ganoderma lucidus. This is a mushroom that produces enzymes that cause the cellulose in tree stumps to break down. They erupt from the ground and reach full size in a very short period of time, sometimes within a matter of just hours. It is from the rapid growth of mushrooms that the term "mushrooming" derives. Their shape is generally a "half circle". When they reach full maturity, vents open in the surface of the mushroom and spores by the million rush forth emulating a volcano eruption. The moss and mulch that surrounded the fresh mushrooms is covered overnight by the sooty colored spores. The rains wash off the dust-like spores and leave nicely stained mushrooms that will remain for most of the rest of the year.
Hope you are enjoying this autumn season!

These are beautiful and I very much enjoyed your narrative!
How beautiful these are, Bob, and what a wonderful post filled with interesting information! I must have been daydreaming in botany class, because I never learned any of this. We're enjoying fall, but it still seems like summer here apart from the lack of rain.
What an awesome sight to have right in your yard, especially when you're holding a camera!! I enjoyed the series, Bob and your commentary!!
Thanks for sharing!!

Bob, thank you for the education. I believe that the mushrooms I captured up a dead tree in my backyard are the same specie. The look alike. Thank you for the photos and the education.

Beautiful, Bob. Love the colors. With the lack of rain in my area, we don't have the opportunity to see any fungus lately. The temperature is going up to 85 today, so it really doesn't feel like Fall.
Beautiful shots of the fungus. You caught the patterning very well, and the lighting on the last of them is perfect! Excellent work!

Their appearance is so varied that every yard could have it's own type. Thanks for the smiley but most of all for visiting and commenting.
