Recovering pictures from a SD card

Can anyone assist me with the issue I'm having.
I shot some pictures for an event, when I got home I viewed them with no problem but when I went back to edit them my computer was stating that I needed to reformat the card. I'm trying to recover the pictures on it

As an initial step, consider reinserting the card in the camera, and if the images are visible there, download to your computer via the USB cable. Then format or replace the card.

I had that occur a couple of times after Windows 10 updates. A reboot of the computer fixed it.

This may not be relevant to you, but Lexar ImageRescue easily recovered all of the images from an SD card (Scandisk) I had formatted. I got it free with a Lexar product I purchased, but it is also available for sale from Lexar.

...but do it only after trying the trick above. You may be able to download images from the camera via USB, meaning your computer's reader may be the problem. If you recently updated your operating system, it is possible that the card reader is no longer, or not yet, supported with the proper device driver.

Always format SD cards in the exact make and model and firmware revision (i.e.; the EXACT BODY) of camera you will use them in. If you have multiple identical bodies using the same exact firmware revision, you can be assured the formatting will be the same for all of them.

Why is this so? Well, different manufacturers have used FAT, or EXFAT formatting, depending on brand, model, and age of the camera. And they also sometimes create hidden (or visible) folders on the card for special, model-specific purposes. Your computer cannot create those special folders with the special files they need!

Great suggestions here. If all else fails, there are businesses that specialize in data recovery from many types of media.
Google to find a resource in your area. If you can't find one send me a private message, and I'll try to help. >>>Alan

My procedure when this happens is: 1. Eject the card from the computer. 2. Reboot the computer. 3. Try again 4. If problem persists I eject the card from the computer again and install it back in the camera and try to observe the images on the camera screen. (They have always been there). 5. Reboot the computer again and try the card again in the computer. They have always been there for me at this point.
Keep in mind that there are many cameras and many computers and many, many ways to do things in the wrong order and get in this fix. Methodical repetition has always solved this problem for me. Just sayin'

Are you "editing" the images while still on the memory card? It sounds as if that's what you're saying in your initial post.

If so, that's very likely what's causing your problem. Don't do that. You should always copy all the images off the memory card onto your computer, before editing them.

(Leave the originals on the memory card until you've confirmed the copies on your computer are okay... then and only then format the card in your camera.)

Or, if you really must edit them and leave them on the memory card, don't use that card in your camera again and add more images to it. Use a different card until you've moved/copied those off the first card and formatted it in-camera.

Some time ago, I used 'Reccuva' (spelling?) . From fifty or so images, the re formatted card was able to re call 95% of the images. Luckily I had not used the card to take more images before I realised the 'Burn to DVD had not worked'. I always check now that the 'Burn' has worked. Hope you get it sorted.
