That is a rather perfunctory explanation as to WHY a lens is fast. A lens of f2.8 or wider (i.e. f1.8, f1.4, etc.) is considered "fast" because a lens will focus at it's widest aperture. The more light the lens takes in when focusing, the faster it can focus. After focusing, the lens will shut down to the aperture selected to make the shot.

I was hoping the person would go to google and see all of the optional answers to his/her questions rather than to go into a detailed and personal view description of their questions. Research is better than a multitude of opinions, in my opinion.

Well, we could all be resource individuals when questions are asked and direct people to the best sources online sources, but it has been my experience through the years that UHH members have been more than willing to take their time to share their expertise to help advance the photographic knowledge of others. I think the basic philosophy has been that no question is too simple. Everybody has to start somewhere. We can either turn them off by turning them away, or turn them on to photography by being a welcoming group.

For the rank amature photo enthusiast, please define "fast glass".

A lens with more light-gathering ability. This is indicated by the focal length - any number less than f/2.8 is "fast".

Less than? I believe f2.8 lenses are considered to be fast.

Yes, I should have said f/2.8 or less!

I appreciate all the responses. I know there are some basics that are common, for those who have been with it. I am trying.
