Here's mine, and I think that it checks most boxes. Sony A57 16MP, Sony 18-135 SAM, Sony 70-300 APO G. I also have a Minolta 50mm Macro which I mainly use to copy old slides and is seldom used.

Sadly, I don't have the $40,000 (body only). If I had it, I'd pay off my credit card debt. You can buy a small house for that price in some God-forsaken parts of the U.S.

No, I was not fishing to check the wisdom of my choices. I am so happy that just looking at my camera bag causes tears of joy to flow.
A phone camera. But if you want to do something other than "General Photography" you need to have equipment to do it. Each time I go out to take pictures I pick camera and lens or lenses that will do what I want the pictures to look light. This may be a DSLR and Kit lens (don't have a point and shoot or bridge camera) to a graphic 4X5 view camera and a few lenses depending on what is to be done. - Dave
I was referring to minimal equipment for an "enthusiast" level photographer, what most of us are. I would say that 16 megapixel camera with a lens combo from 18-300mm would suit our needs. I realize that some of us have lens ranges much wider and higher M.P. count camera bodies as well as full frame set ups.
Nikon D7000 w/28-300mm and 10-24mm lenses +50mm f1.8d.
Although I ended up purchasing a D800, 24-70 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8 at considerably more cost, I could easily fall back to my original setup and be very happy.
