Hey Tom I like this image an awful lot. A simple country scene taken from an interesting angle and its working for me in the main. If the image was mine I would try and clone out the farmhouse its doing nothing but catching the eye and adjust the sky color to something more natural looking than the magenta/lilac tint it has at the moment. Do those two things and I reckon the winners rosette has your name on it.

Hey Billy,

Thanks for commenting on this picture, too. I left the farmhouse in there for local interest and the sky color on my computer and the print doesn't look as magenta as in the one here on UHH? IT actually looks like a burnt or muddy/dirty orange color, which I felt was acceptable. I have actually seen skies that do have a hint of magenta in them, so I guess it doesn't bother me very much. I actually thought about replacing the sky at one point, but then decided it wouldn't be real, and, hence, did not. Perhaps I should have . . . Thanks very much.

Best Regards,
Tom

Withal a lovely image and I'd be pleased to have it in my portfolio.
Billy's comments are certainly insightfully apt.
I would want to have "worked" the scene in the time remaining with the rapidly falling sun.
Specifically, I would have tried for a shot or two that emphasized a view of "the pumpkin patch around me" as opposed to "the pumpkin patch in front of me". A somewhat lower perspective with at least one close foreground pumpkin could provide that stronger sense of being ...IN... the patch.
but...for a'that...you captured that end-of-day moment exceptionally well!

Love the composition and subject! You were able to get great depth with the spacing of the pumpkins, starting with very close.

Interesting, appealing light (I love shooting into the sun). Sky is a light pink for me, looks fine. The only thing I notice when download and enlarge is that the sun rays that are most directly center/straight down seem to end abruptly. Did you do any cloning there?

Overall a fun and eye-catching image and great seasonal theme for those of us above the 35th parallel.

Hi Dave,

Well, you are quite kind knowing how capable you are with your photography. Yes, this time of year and the time I arrived, the sun was falling rapidly, indeed. I did take about 2 or 3 shots, but I definitely felt this one was the best. I had taken one shot where I was actually sitting on the ground in the pumpkin patch, but I did not get the sun and it was rather plain and seemed boring to me.

I personally like how the corn stalks lead right up to the sun at an angle and think the 'line' created accents the image. Also, the long expanse of the pumpkin patch seems to support that feeling as well. Lastly, the sun's rays seem to fall right in line with this artistic 'theme' of the image. It is almost like a diminishing perspective going off into the sunset, but with the return of the rays coming back; like a pseudo effect. Thank you very much for your critique and comments.

Best Regards,
Tom

Greetings Linda,

I appreciate your comments and your artistic feel of the image - I hope? If you look very closely, the rays do not really truncate as much as you may think. They almost dissolve and slowly fade away into the greenery and orangish cast from the sun - at least, that is what I see? The image is quite real, with the the exception that I did add a pumpkin or two off to the far right between the 'path' and the edge of the corn stalks. I also added one on the extreme camera left side, right at the end of a ray. I made the additions since the spaces looked a little bare (see next paragraph). Also, you may like reading my response to Dave above.

The pumpkins varied naturally in size, color, and intensity due to their age, and most likely exposure to the weather elements as well as numerous people walking in the field, because this is where people pick their own for a common price of $4 each. The farmer is a friend and quite the trusting, Christian soul.

Thanks Linda for taking the time and making your valued observations. Your input and depth of feeling of your critique is very appreciated.

Best Regards,
Tom

Nice capture Tom !!! I'm sure you took more but if not, you still have time to return for a lower angle shot with more sky in view. Possibly, low and close to one of the pumpkins as a subject along with a sunset. Just my opinion and views.

Dave,

Yes, I could go back and take some more shots, but no time to get prints for the Open House, masked, framed, and mounted in two days! However, I like your idea for the next shot. I would really have to get down low (probably lying on the ground, would be my guess) and almost looking up at a certain angle to catch the sun and get the star effect.

Also, if I get real close to a pumpkin, I doubt I would be able to keep it and the background, sun, etc. all in focus. The DOF would be too shallow and it would also probably be too dark?

Best Regards,
Tom
