The Isle of May is situated right at the limit of the Firth of Forth where it meets the North Sea. In spring and summer it is an important breeding site for seabirds including Puffins and Arctic Terns. In October huge numbers of Grey Seals come to the island to give birth to their pups. The females come into season very soon after giving birth so the males hang around waiting for the opportunity to mate. The first pups of the season were born last week. I went out there today hoping to see pups but no luck.
They look like they are having fun.
I like the fifth the best.

Enjoyed these very much David they seem to be having a great time. Thank you for the information too. Excellent captures.
Really great set! I will be in Scotland end of November. Hoping I will get a day or two without rain to shoot.
Good set David, bring some fish next time and bribe them into more action.
Great shots here David. I enjoyed this series. I've been to a place in Edinburgh where I could look across the Firth of Forth and see Fife. I love to say that. I've got to get back over there to visit our friends in Inverness. Cheers,
-Doc
Great info and series, David. Thanks!

Hello Sylvia
Most of them are females just waiting to go into labour. The males play no part in the pupping but are waiting for the females to come into season again. I know that we should not compare human behaviour to animals but it is very hard not to. Some females appeared to play up to the males and to challenge other females who got too close. The island has virtually no beaches so the pups are born on the rocks and are in great danger in stormy weather. This was the last landing on the island. The seals will only have a few scientists of company now. This is to allow them to get on with giving birth and feeding their pups with minimum disturbance.
Really glad that you enjoyed them. Thank you very much for looking and for the thumbup, always appreciated.
