Canon Shutter Count, FoCal

FoCal has included Canon Shutter Count within their Lens Calibration software. Once you own the software, the shutter count software is there for your use. I know all the cheap o, free folk will scoff at this, but FoCal is much better than a yardstick, and box. You get a full report on the color rendition, focus speed and accuracy in a graph you can read, no matter the condition of your eyes. FoCal 2.3 will also test both Telephoto, and the wide angle of any AF lens mounted on the body, and give a value best for both ends. On the 5D Mark IV, it will adjust on both ends of a zoom. For only $37.00 it is a real bargain in both time and money.

Bill - Do you happen to know whether FoCal just works with digital gear or will it provide the same (or similar) benefits for analog 35mm camera users as well? /Ralph

Focal is designed to use the MFA (microfocus adjustment) feature on DSLRs to correct autofocus errors (front or back focusing). There are 3 versions available, each with more features and higher cost. Personally, I'd recommend the middle or high-end version (the mid version is limited to 400 mm or shorter lenses), but versions can be upgraded if you decide later. I'm not sure if autofocus film cameras such as the Canon EOS-1n or v have MFA adjustment capabilities that could benefit from Focal.

A sacrificial chicken and walking three times widdershins around the cauldron could be more effective, and you could still eat the chicken!

Probably won't help with the Canon F1 or Leica M6 though. Your own memory is probably much more reliable. How scary is that?

Thrice and once, the hedge-pig whin'd.
Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and caldron bubble.

On the website of FoCal's maker ( Reiken in the UK) there is a list of the cameras and models they support.

I'm loving it - almost no control buttons/dials to learn (Lol) - was taking photos in the first 5 minutes.

FoCal will only work on Digital camera bodies, and will not work even on those digital bodies that don't support micro adjustment.
