I thought the song declares, "land of the free and home of the brave." I labor under the understanding that he is free to make a protest and brave enough to withstand all the anticipated hatred thrown his way.

I'm afraid you got it backwards. He would be disrespecting those who fought and died for our freedoms if he DIDN'T express what he deeply felt. A saying attributed to Voltaire expresses it best: "I may vehemently disagree with what you are saying, but I will fight to the death for your right to say it."
