Anyone Done a Full Backup From the Cloud?

I've seen a number of posts one UHH and elsewhere where people indicated the process of backing up to the cloud was very slow - in some cases taking weeks. So, is it like that if you have to restore your data, also? I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has had to restore their entire photo collection - especially a large collection (e.g. >50,000 photos). How'd that go? How long did it take? Any issues?

No.

It is 'secure' on the way that the ISP (cloud storage) is backed up.
It is insecure if the ISP goes out of business. (no worries about Google, Amazon and the like - at the moment)
It is insecure as anything posted on the cloud using an account can be hacked (paranoid comment)
It is insecure, if you fail to pay your monthly fee foe any reason, it is gone. (free storage are at most a few GB)

Slow? It depends HOW you back-up.
If you copy one file at the time as needed there is very little difference.
If you copy a gazillion files in one time (or a large multi GB)... Good luck. Note that you can still use your Internet connection so it is not a total loss.

Too many negatives for me. So 'No' (again).

My initial backup took about a week for the directories I selected, but I would imagine that it was not a contiguous process. I have not needed to do a restore yet (but I didn't say that.) Even if a complete restore may take a week (or more since it's been adding files), it's much better than me having to do it manually and keep track of what I restored.

Errr... backups are never up to date as they are always only as good as the last one.

Manual backup? Why? There are software programs that do it quite well using whatever format you want from CD/DVDs to the 'cloud'

No, definitely not manual! That's the nice thing about Carbonite- ALL automatic, and it tells you the back-up status of each file/directory. Usually any changed files are automatically backed up within five or ten minutes of creation or modification.

I back up every week or so to an assortment of hard drives. should I need a complete restore, it wont take long. I also backup to amazon cloud ( $12.00 for a year)
initially it took me a few weeks to upload 12.000 pix. I have never had to do a restore from the cloud. Its just there in case there is ever a fire etc. plus I can access my pix anytime, and from just about anyplace .

I should have titled this post, "Anyone Done a Full RESTORE From the Cloud?" Sorry for any confusion.

I expect that a restore would be much faster than the backup. Download speeds are considerably faster than upload speeds.

👍 Exactly - often on the order of 10x.

I have Carbonite, never a problem. Backs up constantly. Initial backup took hours, not days.

I had to restore an HD that failed and I use BackBlaze I let them know what I needed and they sent me an HD with my back-up on it which I used to restore my dead HD on a new HD named the same as the dead HD then LR found all the photos. IF you send the BackBlaze HD back you get a partial refund

(I think I had on the order of 500 Gig total, maybe.)

Yes, it does seem to be slow, but it gets done eventually, and that's the point. If I were to use a cloud service, I think I would use BackBlaze. Right now, I have important files backed up to two eternals and a NAS. When I "important," if they all disappeared this afternoon, life would go on.

I backup five drives to the Cloud as well as to externals. No question the recovery of data would be slow, but not as slow as the upload. Probably three times as fast. My upload speed is approximately 40 Mbps while my download is 120+ Mbps. My photo drive is 2TB. It did take about a week to upload. However, the succeeding incremental daily backups are pretty fast due to the small increase of new data. If I had to recover the drive from the Cloud, I suspect it would take a few days.

Agonizingly slow! Cloud backup is the LAST RESORT. It's what you use if the house burns down and your off-site backup drive also fails.
