Where to download new photos

I read a lot of Matt Kelby's books and he seems to prefer downloading all new photos to a portable hard drive first and then upload to Lightroom as needed. How many others follow that principle and if not please share your process.

I use separate HD in my computer for my photos. I have hot swap doors that allow me to do backups on the HD simply by opening the door and putting in the back up drive. The backup is then removed and stored in a safe place like bottom left of my sock drawer. Using SSDrives is extra safe since they can be dropped to the floor... bounce... and survive.

Down loading to a HD allows one to chose the keepers from the junk.... why complicate life cluttering LRoom with all photos???

Search EBay or Amazon, $18

I download all to LR then review and get rid of the rejects on step rather than 2 steps

Welcome to the Hog.
I have a separate internal drive dedicated to storing photos. I then back up the entire drive to an external drive and to the "cloud". There are many choices for the procedure.

Not me.
I up load them to Photos for OS X. They are automatically copied to Time Capsule by Time Machine, they are also automatically copied to iCloud.

My process is download the images to a computer. Back those images to a second drive on that computer. The copy the images to a second drive on a second computer. That gives me two backup copies. Then I copy the images to the computer on which I do my processing. Once a month, I copy the "new" files to a third computer for backup again.

I have an internal D drive that gets all my data. That gets backed up regularly. I'd rather not be dependent on a separate external drive for storing my originals. if you import them into LR, would you copy/move them to the computer then?

I use Lightroom for the import and store all my files to an external Thunderbolt drive which uses WD Red drives and runs in RAID 1. At the same time, I am also copying the same files to a Synology NAS Server, also with WD Red drives and also running RAID 1. From there, I have backups made to other devices via a couple of software systems including Apple and Synology Backup. Finally, I swap hard drives with a friend at least once a month for an off site backup. Anal, I know, but works well for me. My Lr Catalog also is on the Thunderbolt drive -- nothing is stored on the internal drive except the software itself. I use an iMac for PP work. Best of luck.

Jerry, do you have both an internal C drive as well as the internal D drive?? Are they mirrored drives ? Just curious. ~FiddleMaker
