Please see the attached photo of my lens, which came loose while shooting the X-Finity Races at Richmond Raceway last night.

Bummer!

2 year old lens with a 5 year warranty.

Has to go back to Nikon......Right?

Or is this a simple repair?

Hate to give it up with many events coming up.

Thanks!

The zoom ring (outer ring shown in photo) has come loose and it jams when you go from 18MM to 140MM.

Didn't fix it....

It just comes loose almost every time I extend the lens.

Is it glued on there or is there something I am missing about what holds it in place?

I tried holding it and twisting to see if had an internal locking mechanism but so far NG.

it is a snap ring type of system. I had the same thing happen to mine. SOOOOOO take some tape and after setting it back in place, tape it so that it wont come off.. That will hold you until you can send it in. I recommend bypassing Nikon directly and send it to a local (or at least closer) authorized dealer/repair business.

Thanks.....it is now clipped in and holding. Think I will check with Nikon, there maybe a tech secret approach that will save me sending it in. Maybe a line-up issue with certain locking tabs. I thought of the tape as well till a slow period arrives. Was even thinking of buy a refurb as a backup. Love the 18-140MM :o)

O hi O

I, too had the same problem on the same lens. Sent back to Nikon, and was still under my 5 year warranty.

This happened to me but on a Sigma lens, a friend of mine repairs cameras and suggested I put it in the sun for a couple of hours and the heat shrunk the rubber. Work like a charm. Or you could order one from eBay, would be cheaper than sending back to Nikon. Good luck.

Stuff breaks at inconvenient times. Why bellyache? Either get it fixed or not. Rent another lens or borrow one for your upcoming events. Geesus.

I asked if there was an easy repair besides sending it back, pretty simple request, so that is bellyaching? Suggestion.....get more rest, exercise more and drink less. You will feel much better :o)

Why on earth would you attempt a repair that could void your warranty? That's just dumb and it has nothing to do with me.
