Has anyone had any experience with the Canon SX 40 HS? From what i've seen online it's a pretty nice camera. I'm curious about the Macro setting and how well it does. I know it can't do 1:1 but would like to see some samples if available.

What would you like to see a sample picture of?

I just got one of these as a carry around camera. I installed the CHDK firmware hack the enables RAW support. The only thing I do not like about the camera is the high compression rate on the JPEG. I corrected this with the firmware hack.

I am open to any questions about the camera.

I like the sx40 camera. The macro is pretty good all considering it is not a true 1:1.I will post a few macro shots later that i took of the stamens and pistols of a lily. The cons: Too bulky (i have small hands) Manual focus,in my opinion, is almost useless. Does not have raw. No biggie to me as i use jpeg all time. No ability to sync with remote cable release. But with hack chdk firmware installed you can use raw,use a remote cable and maximize other features that the camera does not have.
Personally i am hesitant in installing this ckdk program.
Go ahead and purchase the sx40 and you will be very happy!! Good luck!!

I purchased one from B&H but after testing it out I sent it back and got a Panasonic FZ100 (the FZ150 is even better). The Canon was just too soft at almost every range above 200. I am a Canon girl (7D & 5d II) but for a small bridge camera to take on trips I would not recommend the SX. just my opinion.

I am very happy with my SX40HS. I have not really tried the macro option, but I have taken close-ups that I was happy with. Personally, I love that camera!

Thanks. I've had Canon DSLR's before. I loved them but couldn't jutify keeping because of my limited time to use them. I thought i would try the p&s thing to see if i'm satisfied, but i've got my doubts.

Concerning the CHDK firmware hack, it is very safe to use. I found the instructions in the ZIP file to be the best guidance. The instructions on the web site was very complicated while the included text file was very straight-forward. I installed it on an 8Gb C-10 SD card and it took about 10 minutes on my MacBook.

The main features I use are the Super-fine JPG, the RAW, the removal of the limitations on the long exposures, and the limiting of the AutoISO.

It took me a while to get the screen layout the way I wanted. The defaults put items over the Canon items. Once I got them arranged differently, I am very pleased with it. There is extensive support online for CHDK and some very good manuals for the features.

I have a SX30, that I use the two sec shutter delay in lue of a remote shutter release. I have had it for almost two years. with flawless operation. It's not a dslr, but it's not a Point and shoot either..... hot shoe for external flash. Raynox makes a lens attachment for Macro.....

This camera is one of the best point and shoot you can get.

This is a macro shot, the blurry chain is sitting on the lens itself.

I don't have any macro shots to upload but I do own the SX40 and it's a good camera. I got mine from SAM's Club ($369). My mom just bought the SX50 from Best Buy and it's totally awesome.
