5,000ft up a Mountain, Camara de Lobos Fishing Village, Madeira, Portugal.

Madeira dates back to 1415 and is noted for its wine. The capital is Funchal. It has a 120 mile network of tunnels with links to isolated mountain communities cutting the journey time around its steep volcanic contours from 4 hours to 1. The old scenic roads are now closed for safety reasons, my trip was to the west coast where I experienced 36 tunnels!
The fishing village of Camara de Lobos was where Winston Churchill stayed in 1949 to paint the beautiful scenery.
My driver/guide for the day was Deogo who was obviously practicing to enter the next Grand Prix!! Sitting beside him was an experience not to be forgotten, a charming young man with nerves of steel.
On our way down we stopped to visit a small waterfall called the brides veil. Towards the bottom of the picture you can faintly see an old road cut into the rock. There was some stunning scenery but no where to stop as the roads were hardly wide enough for two cars to pass!
The wind was so strong on the top of the mountain I was not allowed to do the 30 minute walk, also difficult to stay upright for shots.

Very beautiful downloads and sounds like quite an experience! Glad you made it through, Sylvia
Thanks for the pictures! We were there on a cruise ship stop several years ago and all we could see were fog and clouds.
