Photoshop CS6

I certainly realize that Photoshop is way more than many people want/need/can afford, but for those that do use it, CS6 is an incredible upgrade. The improvements and tweaks to Camera Raw alone is worth the price. But the new crop tool, text tools, blur options, etc., make this one of those things that we had no idea we needed until we saw them. It is ONLY 64-bit so that is a problem if you have any plug-ins that require the 32-bit version, but if you are upgrading from CS5 you can always go back to that if needed.
All my NIK, OnOne, and Imagenomic plugins transferred with no problems...at least not yet.

Seriously, I know what you meant and this is a good report for those sitting on the CS5 fence. Thanks!!
I'm one of the CS5 fence sitters (LR4 has reduced, but not eliminated my need for CS5, so a CS5 upgrade will probably occur later this year when time allows.)

Yes, there is no option to open it in 32-bit mode

I got CS6 yesterday - I set up Bridge the way I liked it in CS5 and now will play with the tools to see the difference.

CaptainC, Please keep us in the loops as you discover things you like (or do not like).

I bought CS5 less than a year ago. Wonder if I can get price break on the upgrade?

The Magic Wand tool was big improvement in CS5 over CS4!

Edit........

I just learned that there is no upgrade price for academic versions. I can download CS6 for $199 or get it in a box for $249.

I'm 1,000 miles away from my machine right now, but installed CS6 just before this trip. I won't swear to it, but I really believe that during installation, it gave me the option to install either/both the 32-bit and the 64-bit versions. They are separate programs that install separately.

I got mine directly from Adobe using a student discount based on one of my children as I have done on the previous 2 versions, already found and reported a minor bug.

I am involved with KelbyTraining and lynda.com for training purposes.

Actually if you are running Window 7 CS6 will install both the 32-bit and the 64-bit version and you can switch back and forth between them. You will lose some of the functionality of the 64-bit version when running in 32-bit but you will be able to apply your 32-bit filters. You could actually set up a desktop shortcut for both versions.

I do understand that if you are running a Mac that can only run in 64-bit.

That is interesting. It is not a big issue, since if I ever do need the 32-bit stuff, I can just open CS5. I did not realize Windows still had the either/or option.

Overall, I think this is the best upgrade since they went from PS7 to CS.

CaptainC, I currently use Aperture as the first place to open my RAW files. I user Aperture because of the image storage tools. Most of the time I end up making a round-trip into PhotoShop and returning the adjusted photo to Aperture. I have both CS4 (32 bit) and CS5 on my computer. Aperture lets me quickly select which version of CS to make these round trips to. I prefer to use CS5 (64 bit) because it's so fast and the tools all seem to work better. However I have an old 32 bit application "FocusFixer" That I sometimes like to use use. In these incidents I make my round trip to CS4 where FocusFixer works. There is a 64 bit version of Focusfixer for Macs coming out this fall. I'll be upgrading that program and buying CS6 at the same time.

Thank you for letting me know how much you like CS6.

Dave

Got this directly from Adobe:

"Photoshop CS6 wil run on XP 32-bit though some of the cool features that use the graphics card on your system won't work.

I would strongly encourage you to run on Win 7/64bit OS. Your experience will be much better.

You can install both 32bit and 64bit and you can switch between the two."

Right - for windows.

I suppose there is a good reason why they have to cater to an out-of-date Windows system. :-)

I would venture to say that there are more Windows XP systems in use than Windows 7 systems at the present. I have an XP Pro system that has run flawlessly for four years now and an XP laptop that is now 5 years old with no problems, so I have no motive to move up to Windows 7. Adobe would be shooting themselves in the foot if they did not support Windows XP 32-bit with Photoshop CS6.
