It will ungrey if you select jpeg only. Its a Nikon thing. I was using jpeg standard and Nef as a default and found the HDR (page 191 manual) greyed . You can use it for JPEG only but the effects are good. I have not experimented further apart from putting it under favourites. Now you have to decide between taking three bracket or use the D-Lighting. I just noticed watching a video that I did not receive the flash cap for the camera . My sales person tells me they don't come with the camera anymore?

You took the words right out of my mouth. One idea however, some of those "terrible" hdr composites ARE kind of fun to look at. I've done a few.

Most in camera HDR only works in JPEG, not RAW or RAW+JPEG on my Canons it is grayed out unless I set the image to JPEG only.

I always shoot raw and my Canon 7D Mark II will create HDR composites while in raw mode. Not sure what Canon body you are using. When shooting HDR, the camera takes three raw images using different exposures and combines them into an HDR jpeg.

Yep. Many are way overdone. Supersaturated color mostly I think.

On my Camera, you have to have the multiple exposure set at a burst of 3 or 5 exposures, then go to HDR and set the exposure of each shot.

I think you are kind of off topic this refers to Nikon d500, the option is greyed if you have jpeg and raw selected. Canon does not share this issue. If you Google far enough and long enough you will find others with this issue. Again its a Nikon thing. Nikon has some nice samples with their advertising brochure.

It sounded like you were saying there were no redeeming qualities to HDR. If I was mistaken I apologize.

HDR works well with NEF...

Interesting how we all interpret things differently. It sounded to me like he was jealous, as if maybe his camera doesn't shoot HDR.

I've heard a lot of bad things said about "you people." I'm glad I'm not in that group. They seem to get blamed for everything.

That's it! HDR cannot be used to record RAW (NEF) images. I did find it in the manual. Thanks, everyone.

That's one reason why I'd rather do my own HDR. Just set your camera up to shoot raw, and bracket 3images 2 stops apart. Then use an HDR stand alone, plugin, or HDR in a pixel editing software you already own.

On Nikon, the RAW (NEF) mode disables HDR. Shoot in JPEG. Or you could use a tripod and take multiple bracketed NEFs, merging them into HDR in Lightroom.

"This means shooting RAW or Tiff images, as these formats are both capable of 16-Bit which, while not infinite, gives us about 64,000 different levels of information." I always use manual settings for shooting HDR - not totally manual, but I shoot in NEF and decide on exposure steps and how many images to shoot.
