My husband and I will be staying in Winter Park, Colorado, for a week very soon, and I am wondering where the best places for photo taking are. Since there must be great scenery at every turn, what I probably need is to know how to narrow down the choices!

Thanks so much for your help.

You are already at one of the best places - Winter Park. There should be an occasional elk strolling in the towns in the area, but your best bet is to go into Rocky Mountain National Park. One can take the ridge road through the park and then back. Or loop through the park on ridge road, go south towards Grand Lake, go east, and then north over Berthoud Pass back to Winter Park. Once you start exploring the area, you will understand what the fox feels like when he finds himself in the chicken house. So many pictures, so little time.

Headed that way myself in 2 weeks. Headed into the Rocky Mountain National Park from the south through the Grand Lake area, etc. There is a wealth of info available almost to the point of overload. Here is a link from the park service.

I know you will enjoy your time no matter where you go. Maybe we'll pass along the way.

Happy Shooting

John Fielder's book "Best of Colorado" is a good resource on where to take pictures. Check out your library for it.

I live here, and definitely get to Rocky Mountain National Park. Very common to see elk walking all over the place. Be sure you visit Estes. Cute little town with interesting shops. Neat old buildings too. Cheers.

One more item - there are moose in the valley on the west end of the park. I still think God made the moose from leftover body of other animals. I had the chance to see a one month old baby moose. He was so beyond ugly and gangly it actually made him cute! Just be careful around them and their offspring. They maybe somewhat use to humans and somewhat hard to rile because of that, but moose are actually bigger than elk and very protective.

Staying in Estes for 5 days at Alpine Trail Ridge Inn (nice people) after we leave the Grand Canyon. Looking forward to some more great photo ops.

Happy Shooting

Thanks everyone for the good advice. Definitely RMNP is on our list. I appreciate the info about elk and moose, too, and we'll certainly go to Estes. One more question: is Bear Lake worth what appears to be terribly crowded conditions?

Thank you all so much!

If you love key to hike there are a lot of great hikes with great photo ops. Columbine Lake hike has a great reward at the end of the hike. Get the app Alltrails and you'll find a lot of other great hikes in and around Grand County.

I'm not much of a hiker, but I'll look into Columbine Lake. Thanks!
