Trying out my new Tamron 90mm, 2.8 lens on these two hoppers. Even at f16 the DOF seems very small. I didn't check the app to see what it is but in AF it did a lot of seeking. Anybody got any hard and fast rules of thumb for using a Macro lens? I got the grin on his face anyway.

Really a good shot. I have that lens, and it does focus seek a lot. I typically use manual focus with it.

You could probably get a lot of good advice by posting/asking in either the True Macro Photography or Close Up Photography forum sections.

I always use manual focus when shooting with my macro lens and refocus, re-shoot several times if possible.
DoF is an issue with macro and there aren't any simple solutions that I know of.
A lot of folks use focus stacking to achieve greater DoF.

Thanks for the replys, I've messed around with focus stacking when I could get a tripod to the location. It's all fun so I just try something else!

Oh, nice shot bobnewman !!

I had the same type "action" in my garden the other day...
I thought. . . ????, hummmmm, grab the camera, about 50 ft. away and trapse mud in and on the living room White carpet and catch it from the Mrs. or what to do!?
They were Summer Squash Bugs doing the same thing your grasshoppers were doing.... and in plain sight too!
I had to make a fast and accurate decision, I Love the squash, grab the camera, get chewed out for the mud on the carpet.... OR,
So, I killed them!!
Yep, deader than a door nail!

I like summer squash and they were distroying my plant!
I buried them beside the plant, I think.

And I lived another day not having to explain the mud on the White carpeting!

Nice shot bobnewman!

I've shot quite a bit of macro (and insect porn) over the years always used manual focus, as I'm one of those old fossils who learned macrophotograpy years before autofocus slr's were invented. I never used a dedicated macro lens, preferring a zoom lens in the 70-150 or 70-210 combined with a 2x teleconverter and extension tubes, a technique I learned from my old motorcycling buddy and photography mentor Robin Perry some 45 years ago. My favorite combination was an Olympus OM-2n, fitted with, in this order, a 2x teleconverter, a full set of extension tubes (7mm, 14mm, 21mm) and a Vivitar 70-150mm zoom. The zoom was used to focus. Robin made a lot of money selling stock photos with this setup, and I had a great time shooting insects and flowers with it. Unfortunately, I lost my entire archive in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene a few years ago, so I can't post anything from this era, I have not yet acquired ext. tubes for my Nikon D3300, or a teleconverter, but I do have a couple of zoom lenses suitable for the experiment, keep watching!
