Nikon D610 RAW photo (slot one) processed in Photo

I just came home from a vacation where I shot in RAW for the first time (slot one = RAW, slot two = JPEG). When I uploaded all my slot one card photos into Photos and looked at the "get info", all the pictures are listed as JPEG. Does Photos automatically convert a RAW image to JPEG when importing it from a Lexar card reader? If not, is there something obvious I'm doing wrong? Finally, what Mac compatible apps are best suited for pp RAW files which I would then save as JPEGs? I've been pp files for several years (always JPEG), so I hope this isn't a newbie/too simple question. And I prefer the advice of experienced UHHers to doing a generic Google search of the question.

No - if raw, it will tell you.

Jerry, no conversion is done until you open the image in an editor. Photoshop is Mac compatible. If you are looking for a free application check out Light Zone.

If you have loaded your photos into "Photos" there will be a little square in the lower left hand corner of each photograph. It should look like a double square with JPEG listed for the top square. If you hover over that with your cursor it will indicate that there is a RAW photo stacked under the JPEG. To view the RAW go up to "Images" in the top left selections and scroll down to where it says open RAW (or something like that) when you open that picture in EDIT you will see "RAW at the top of the screen. If it opens in JPEG that will be indicated instead.

Jerry - a RAW image is not a photo you can view. It is just information. Google "RAW format" and read about what you can and can't do with a RAW image. The image is visually converted for the sake of whatever tool you are viewing it in. Once you Import the raw image into photo processing software, make changes - none, few or many - and Export it, you will have an opportunity to define what format that copy gets saved as. The RAW information will still exist. You can bring it back into the same or another PP software app, make totally different changes and Export that copy in whatever format the PP app lets you use.

Canon provides their DPP software free with their cameras. You can process their raw files with that on a Mac. I don't know if Nikon offers a similar software, but it seems like they certainly could.

I can't find the little double box in any corner - I'm using the latest version of El Capitan and Photos. I also don't get either of the drop down options you mention in Images or Edit. I thought perhaps I had reversed the slot designations, but checked this morning and, in fact, the card I uploaded was from slot one which is the RAW card. As suggested in another reply, I'll Google RAW and see what I can learn.

All Nikon (and probably Canon and other DSLR) images are first shot as RAW then, if you have selected JPG as your source they are converted to JPG using your processing selections. RAW is the "Native" image production for the camera then it preprocesses the RAW image to JPG if you want it. Otherwise it writes the RAW image to the memory card. JPG is a second step in image production and it's only real advantage in camera storage is the camera did some (or all) of the processing work and saved the image as a smaller file on the card. Some people choose RAW plus JPG in their camera option where the camera will save a copy of each, but then you have a very large RAW file and a smaller JPG of the same image (only processed using your pre-shot instructions). Which is better? There are several links on this site arguing that and we don't need to go into that again here.

My raw file in my macs Photos shows jpg also. However, these same photo loaded from my card reader direct to Lightroom will show as raw files. Since I only shoot raw with my d610 do not fret and load directly into Lightroom and no worries.

Thanks for the info. Two questions however: 1. my card reader defaults to uploading to Photos - how can I bypass this default process?; 2. I use Pixelmator to do much of my post processing (if I can't get it done by Photos - can I import RAW files to this app if I first upload them to Photos and then import/export them to Pixelmator?

Isn't there a help thing on a Mac that you can type what you need help doing? If so I would go to help and type something like change picture upload defaults. Or you could Google it. The answers are there waiting for you faster than waiting for someone here on UHH to answer, probably wrong too.

It is not the slot where you put your card into that sets the file to raw, you have to set up your camera to do so - read the manual!

I did set the camera to make slot one = RAW and slot two = JPEG. Previously, I used slot one = JPEG and slot two = Duplicate (as a backup in case of a slot one card failure). Not as helpful feedback as I wanted!

I think as stated above, you cannot view a RAW file. It's not an image file. It has to be converted to either JPG, PNG or TIFF. Adobe and all the OEMs supply RAW Converters.
