Did you notice that the Australian Firenado rotates backwards from our North American tornados. Coriolis forces at work.
Very interesting, never heard or seen one before. Would definitely make a summer thriller movie.

I saw another picture of one yesterday. I guess they're rather common. They did make four "Sharknado" movies, so I guess anything's possible.
Depends on what your definition of "common" is. I've never seen anything except small ones and I've photographed a couple...and I've been a very active fireman for twenty five years now. Now since I'm a fire photographer I get the "devil" at almost every fire...one of the best ones was in the smoke from the World Trade Center on 9-11 and I'd love to have a copy of that one but the photographer wanted more than I could afford. The best one that I ever personally shot was at a mobile home fire in Lakeview, N.C. several years ago on an arson fire. The devil was clearly defined with good horns and an evil smirk. Problem is that was taken back when I was still using film so that shot is in an MRE box somewhere with thousands of others...filing was never my strong suit.
